Synopsis

Front Cover, The Man in the Black Suit, by Sylvain ReynardAcacia Santos excels at her job as concierge at the prestigious Hotel Victoire in Paris. When her superior, Marcel, is attacked in a supposed random mugging, she is tasked with serving one of the hotel’s most mysterious and attractive guests.

Nicholas Cassirer checks into the hotel under an assumed name every three months. Usually, he stays in the penthouse suite with a beautiful female companion but on this occasion, he arrives alone and is displeased in having to deal with someone new. A match of wits ensues as he tests Acacia’s expertise with a series of almost impossible demands. Her intelligence and creativity rise to the challenge, earning his respect.

They strike a tenuous accord until Acacia discovers a famous stolen painting in his suite, she contacts a former boyfriend who works for the elite BRB, a unit of French law enforcement that deals with art thefts.

Nicholas is questioned by police and released when it is revealed the painting is a reproduction. Irked with her behavior, Acacia’s supervisor demotes her threatening dismissal and the cancellation of her work permit.

But Acacia has already attracted Nicholas’s attention. Remorseful that she may lose her job on his account, he offers her a choice – she can wait until her supervisor dismisses her, or she can leave the city of lights behind and become his personal assistant.

Acacia initially refuses his offer, but Nicholas is persistent. He reveals himself as a man who quietly acquires stolen art in order to restore it to its rightful owners. Faced with mounting familial debts and the possibility of dismissal and deportation, she agrees to work for him.

Nicholas opens up a whole new world of beauty and intrigue to Acacia as they travel the globe. Soon the line between employer and assistant is blurred, and the two lonely people embark on a passionate relationship.

My Review of The Man in the Black Suit

The Man in the Black SuitThe Man in the Black Suit by Sylvain Reynard
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As much as I love to read books by this author, words often fail me when it comes time to write a review. I never feel up to the task. But reading, recommending, and promoting his work is such an honor and a pleasure that I am compelled to do my best to capture the intensity of the reading experience and the inspiration I feel every time I pick up one of his novels – to read for the first time or to re-visit them, as I often do when I need to feel fully alive.

That being said, his latest novel, The Man in the Black Suit, is a triumph: an intricate, complex romantic journey that seamlessly weaves history, art, culture, suspense, and romance into a visual, visceral reading experience that will stay with you long after you finish the last chapter. I’ve been anticipating it for nearly a year, finished it in a day, and I already long for more. It was, in a word, stunning. I don’t know that I’ve ever used that descriptor before, but it’s the first word that came to mind when I closed my Kindle. I had–and still have–a book hangover that will last through the New Year.

As with all of Sylvain’s body of work, TMITBS deals with our deepest human failures, urges, and complex emotions: guilt, fear, shame, hate, racism, the desire for vengeance and the desperation for redemption. It exposes our greatest conflicts and darkest weaknesses; but ultimately highlights the very best traits humanity has to offer: hope, strength, courage, compassion, forgiveness, passion, tolerance, and abiding love. It is impeccably researched and flawlessly written in third-person, lyrical prose that is uniquely Sylvain Reynard. It is the best standalone I’ve read in 2017, and I would love to see Nicholas and Acacia again in a future story.

About Sylvain Reynard

NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY AND #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR

I’m interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition – particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I’m also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

I try to use my platform as an author to raise awareness about the following charities: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation, WorldVision, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and Covenant House. For more information, see my Twitter account.

About the Author

BECCA VRY

Becca

A Chicago native who prefers highrise living and hasn’t owned or driven a car in over twenty years, Vry is a married, stay-at-home mother of two daughters. When not doing the mom thing, she can be found at Art Galleries, poetry readings, creating something on a canvas or through her keyboard, bounding in the mosh pit at a concert with her beloved husband Maximilian, or on the dance floor of her favorite Chicago Goth/Industrial haunts. No matter the setting, she is usually wearing black and her sidewalk-stomping Doc Martens.

Vry is now branching out into original prose with her first release, Hopescapes. It’s an inspirational short story that will appear in Musings: An Argyle Empire Anthology. The story is about the evolution of lifescapes and how the promise of new beginnings inspire many dreamscapes. The theme of this story centers on emerging from the embers of profound loss and hopelessness, to realizing the importance of survival, ongoingness, and the power that comes from re-learning the language of happiness…Two strangers discover that the journey to happiness often comes at a tragic price – the conversation between them, and the connections they realize they share will alter their perspectives in the most unexpected ways. They will never look at the Chicago skyline, or the broadening hopescapes that expand before them, in the same way ever again.

Vry hopes to release a couple of steamy romances in the near future…if her muse cooperates.

KRIS BABE

Kris

Reader, writer, editor. Marketer by day. Politically opinionated. Not fully dressed without a scarf.

So many books, so little time. And so many favorites: The Blind Assassin, Jane Eyre, The Poisonwood Bible, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, The Goldfinch, The Gargoyle, The Dead, the vastly underappreciated Forsyte Saga, almost everything by Dickens.

Outlander and Twific, Shakespeare and Tolkien. IKR?

Yes, I’ve read Ulysses. Yes, I liked the Dublin Murder Squad series better. (And I never did read Finnegan’s Wake—sorry, Professor Boyle).

SHARI IVEY

Shari

A graduate of Valparaiso University, I have dabbled in creative writing on and off since middle school days (first place in that 8th-grade creative writing contest!). My novella, Stranger in a Stranger Land, in Musings: An Argyle Empire Anthology, is my first published work.

When not working or writing, I am an avid music fan, concert goer, television binger and movie watcher. I am divorced with five children – two furry, three not. I am also probably the person in the car next to you, singing like a mad woman or cursing like a sailor.

My genre tends toward fantasy, paranormal and supernatural.
