About PERCEPTION

Front Cover, Perception, by Kendra LeighJackson Dean is a changed man—at least he thinks he is—but when a brush with the past leads him back into territory he’s long since left behind, he finds himself at war with his conscience. Snatching Savannah Harper from a Brooklyn street may have been okay with the wild and reckless guy he used to be, but what about now?

Savannah is used to a life of brutality at the hands of her husband, but being stuffed into the trunk of a car by a brown-eyed stranger injects a fresh wave of terror into her heart.

What transpires between Jackson and Savannah surprises both of them. Despite the unconventional way they’re thrown together, they form a bond that begins to challenge everything they know.

His past. Her present. Their future.

Surrendering to the feelings they’ve unearthed will be a minefield, but it’s going up against the unknown that tests them to their limits.

As the lines between perception and reality blur, it appears that nothing is as it seems.

Perception is not reality… and reality can be soul-destroying.

Perception is a standalone romantic suspense novel featuring a favorite character from The Bound Trilogy. If you enjoy reading stories about strong women and their journeys from victim to survivor, and the men who will go to any lengths to fight for the women they fall for, then you will love this #MeToo inspired heart-wrenching romance.

Due to the nature of the story, it contains subject matter which deals with domestic violence, including physical and emotional abuse, and may be triggering for some people.

My Review of Perception

A little over three years ago, I was fortunate enough to discover Kendra Leigh when she published her debut novel, Bound for Hell, the first book in the uniquely unforgettable Bound Trilogy. I fell deeply in love with Ethan and Angel, and as a matter of fact, Ethan still sets the standard for me when it comes to romantic heroes. It’s embarrassing how often I think of him, but not how many times I’ve indulged in a re-read of that excellent series – it’s like comfort food for the romantic soul.

Somewhere in the middle of the trilogy, I also fell in love with Jackson Dean, Ethan’s strong, enigmatic, intensely loyal friend and protector. He was an absolute treasure as a supporting character, but even more important, he was someone I wanted to get to know apart from his role in the trilogy. When I found out that Kendra was writing a standalone follow-up story featuring Jackson as a primary character, I was beyond excited. And when I had the opportunity to read it, I was utterly blown away, unprepared for its depth and left speechless by its power, not to mention by the unbridled passion in the narrative. It took me days to write this review and still I’m not sure I can capture it all. From its opening paragraph through its epic conclusion, Perception not only exceeded all my expectations, it left me wanting more — again.

There are a few words I probably use too often in book reviews. I’ve recently realized that “powerful” and “compelling” must be two of those words because, having used them to describe other novels, they now feel entirely inadequate to convey the impact of PerceptionPerception is such an important, emotional, relevant, and meaningful story it isn’t simply another “must-read” for your late-summer reading list, it’s a mind-blowing, soul-searing experience in every sense of the word. It will grip your heart from the very beginning and sweep you away on a sometimes terrifying, always mystifying, poignant, passionate journey that will live in your heart long after the last page.

Jackson is a man with a gut-wrenching secret, a dark past overshadowed by a sense of guilt and a need for atonement that made him the strong, devoted protector he has become. Little does he know, as his story begins, that destiny has put him on a path that intersects with the woman who will not only become the love of his life but the one person who will finally help him face his demons and become the man he is meant to be.

Savannah Harper is that woman. She is also concealing a dark, painful secret, trapped in a loveless marriage to a cruel, violent, manipulative man who, fortunately, is so arrogant and narcissistic he fails to recognize her strength, her will, her determination to survive, her intelligence, and her patience. He mistakes her vulnerability for weakness, and grossly underestimates her willingness to wait until the time is right to conquer her demons and find a way to ruin him in the process.

When Jackson and Savannah are thrown together in a serendipitous twist of fate, little do they know that the series of events to follow will irrevocably change their lives. For a blessed few days, they find themselves living fully in the moment, experiencing joy, excitement, spontaneity, and passion; gradually awakening to what life might be like together, yet aware that this one moment in time will inevitably come to an end. Nor can they begin to imagine the treacherous, heartbreaking road they will have to travel to find their way back to each other — if it’s even possible.

If you think for a minute that you know how this romance will play out, you are gravely mistaken. There are twists and turns, triumphs and tragedies that will keep you guessing until the last word of the last chapter — and even then you’ll probably turn the page to make sure there isn’t another terrifying surprise hidden somewhere in the epilogue. I’m not sure I even took a breath in the final few chapters. I laughed, sighed, shouted, and ugly-cried, but I never lost hope, because even in the darkest moments – moments of utter betrayal and despair – Kendra kept faith alive through the strength of her characters and the power of her words.

Perception is a relentlessly suspenseful, sometimes intensely painful story, but please don’t let fear or avoidance of the darker side of life and love keep you from experiencing every scene to the fullest. Because of all the emotions that flooded through me, of all the impressions imprinted on my soul, empowerment is the one that lasts. It is in our darkest hours that we find our greatest strength, and this story is all about finding the strength not only to survive but to succeed beyond your wildest dreams.

Everyone has demons that often seem overwhelming and insurmountable. All men and women have flaws, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities, but they don’t make us weak or powerless unless we hide from them, deny them, or lose faith that we have what it takes to overcome them. As this story so cleverly and intelligently points out, perception isn’t necessarily reality. Unchecked, our often faulty perceptions can make us believe our current reality is our only choice – and result in a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, if we are wise enough to question how we perceive our current situation – and how our perceptions lead us to make often unfounded assumptions about ourselves and others – we can alter our reality, forge a new destiny, and become the persons we are meant to be. This is the message I took away from Jackson and Savannah’s story, and it has already changed the way I look at my own life.

If you haven’t discovered Kendra Leigh, now is the time, and this is the book. If you love edge-of-your-seat suspense, passionate romance that leads to abiding love, and endings that will satisfy your every need, this book will own you. Having read this beautiful story, I am more than willing to wait as long as it takes for Kendra’s next book.

Teaser quote from Perception by Kendra Leigh

Meet Kendra Leigh

Kendra Leigh fell in love with words and reading as a young child. She was at her happiest when Enid Blyton whisked her away up into the magical lands at the top of the Faraway Tree with Moon-face and the rest of the gang.

Now, of course, she has more of a fondness for chocolate, cheese and hot men in suits – not necessarily in that order.

Kendra devotes her life to her devilishly handsome partner, scandalously beautiful daughter and cute as hell Shih-Tzu. She believes in love at first sight, and as well as writing and reading, Kendra has a passion for great movies and brilliantly written TV.

Sometimes the Hell you fear isn’t a place at all. Sometimes it’s the life you’re living. A life filled with darkness, isolation, guilt, and remorse – for a sin you’re convinced you committed, yet can’t remember. A life filled with shallow relationships – because the risk of opening your heart is more frightening than living with your inner demons.

On the surface, Angel Lawson is a poised, confident photographer and successful gallery owner. But underneath, she lives her days in constant fear of exposure, and her nights tormented by nightmares. She has spent years building impenetrable walls to keep the demons at bay.

And then she meets the powerful, persistent billionaire, Ethan Wilde… the one man who sees past the barriers and bravado to her brokenness. Ethan is as intense as he is sinfully sexy. A man so irretrievably captivated, he is determined to possess her – mind, body and soul. But can he help her heal it?

Can Angel risk leaving her ‘safe’ life behind, or is the choice no longer hers?

Ethan Wilde is used to getting what he wants… and what he wants is Angel.

Relentlessly sexy. Emotionally deep. Tangled, twisted, intricately woven love story with romance and suspense. Perfect for fans of Fifty Shades of Grey, Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series and Jodi Ellen Malpas’ This Man Trilogy.

Excerpt …

Looking around the backyard, I smile at how beautiful and happy Savannah looks, and even though I should be happy for her, every time I see Connor with the blonde Barbie on his arm, I want to kick and scream. I still can’t believe he brought a stranger to his best friend’s wedding. No matter how many looks I give the girls, silently telling them that I’m all right, they all know I’m really not. But this is Savannah’s big day and I won’t ruin it by showing Connor that he gets to me.

It’s not just the fact that his date is a stranger who looks like she just stepped out of a Barbie case or just finished playing with one. It’s that she’s exactly what I’m not. She’s blonde. I’m a redhead. She’s a size zero, and, well, I’ve got some curves, and her skin is porcelain while mine is covered with tattoos.

“Annabelle.” Just the sound of his voice sends chills down my arms. I don’t even have to turn around to know it’s Connor. I hate how he always sneaks up on me. A man his size should not be able to sneak up on people.

I take a deep breath before turning around, hoping he can’t read the emotions crawling all over my face. “Connor, you’re letting your date wander unaccompanied? Aren’t you worried about child services?” I try to sound as unaffected as possible but I know he’s not buying it. Why the man has to look so damn good is beyond me. He opted for black jeans that showcase his strong thighs, a white button-down shirt that shows off some of the ink on his chest with a black suit jacket that molds his arms like a second glove. The man’s body is the stuff of fantasy.

He laughs and if I weren’t already fuming with anger already… that does it. He takes a few steps closer until he’s standing so close to me, I can smell his aftershave. “Is that jealousy I hear?”

“You wouldn’t know jealousy if it hit you in the face, Connor.” I shove him, but of course, the man who’s built like a brick wall doesn’t move an inch.

That’s the other thing about Connor; if he were ugly, it would make getting over him so much easier, but God, he is the most gorgeous man I have ever laid eyes on. His dark brown hair is just long enough for a woman to hold on to, and his green eyes…. God, I lose my train of thought every time I stare into them.

“So you’re not clenching your fists because you’re pissed I have a date?” I unclench my hands, trying desperately not to shove him into the pool, because this is Noah and Savannah’s big day, but I want to knock the smirk right off his face.

Standing my ground against Connor is always a challenge. He has this ability to rattle me, but today I choose to hold my ground because he’s right. I am pissed. “Why would I be mad that you brought a date to a family event?”

He leans in to me, his mouth so close to my ear that his breath against my earlobe sends shivers down my body. Damn him for knowing how to get to me. “Is that what we are, Belle, family?” I want to smack the cockiness right off his face, but I’m pretty sure Savannah wouldn’t be happy about me smacking her husband’s best man on their wedding day.

Plus, it feels like we’ve been arguing and fighting forever and I am so tired that I don’t have much fight left in me when it comes to him. “Connor, can you just not do this today?”

“Just admit that it bothers you.” That’s the other thing about Connor; he does these kinds of things because he knows they get to me. It’s like he’s addicted to getting a rise out of me, and like the lovesick fool that I am, I give him exactly what he wants every… single… time.

But today, I push back. “You’re an asshole, Connor, and you know it bothers me. That’s why you did it. That’s why you picked a date who’s only here because you look like the bad boy she never got the chance to fuck in high school.” I can’t believe I said all of that. I know I’ve shocked him, because his body language changes and he goes from charmer to oozing sex in seconds.

He wraps a hand behind my neck and I am so shocked by his touch that I just stand there, unable to move. Whimpering when his hold tightens, I see something pass in his eyes, something dark, something that makes me want to submit. Just as fast as it appeared, it’s gone. “Did you fuck the bad boy in high school, Belle?”

He licks his bottom lip, and God, what I wouldn’t give to taste him just once. I meet his eyes and notice the smirk on his face as I haven’t answered his question.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” I tell him, tilting my head to the side, fighting the urge to lean just a little bit closer to inhale his scent.

Kaithlin Shepherd is the author of The Callaway Series, The Brass Series and The Saints and Sinners series.
Born and raised in Canada by a working single mom and a loving grandmother, Kaithlin surrounded herself with novels by Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts provided by her grandmother. Kaithlin quickly fell in love with reading. It was in high school, thanks to an English teacher, that Kaithlin wrote her first story (although if you ask for it, she will deny ever writing it) about a popular boy band. Inspired by constructive criticism, Kaithlin spent some time developing her love affair with words through more reading than someone would think possible.
After pursuing a higher education, Kaithlin, sat down with a pen and paper and decided to give writing a shot. With no false hope in mind, her first novel, Make Me Whole, slowly came to life. Putting fear and doubt aside, Kaithlin has published five books to date, and has eleven more set to be published in the next two years.
