About Want You…

I might be only nineteen, but I know what I want. It’s Leka Moore. I don’t care that he took me in when he was barely more than a kid himself. I don’t care that he raised me. I don’t care everyone thinks being with him is wrong. I know we belong together, and the only person I need to convince is him.

I found her in the corner of a dark alley. If I hadn’t taken her with me, she would’ve died that night—or maybe worse. Before I knew it, she became the light in my dark life, the haven from the madness. I watched her grow up. I tried to teach her right from wrong. Now that she’s an adult, I’m feeling things that no good man should ever feel. But then…I’ve never been a good man. I have a chance at redemption by saving her from the greatest danger of all—me.

He’s the guy no one likes…Despite winning two national championships, JR “Ace” Anderson was sent packing from his old school after losing the trust of his coach. At Southern U, he has a second chance to prove that his college legacy isn’t endless debauchery and selfishness. But his reputation precedes him, and his teammates offer a chilly welcome in the locker room. The one person who is willing to accept him is the very woman he should stay away from—his new coach’s daughter.

She’s the girl everyone loves…

Bryant Johnson’s only goal in life is to make others happy, even at her own expense. One look at her father’s new star quarterback, and she knows that Ace is her next project. With a reputation for being a “jerk whisperer”, Bryant has spent her last three years at college reforming sorry behavior and turning bad boys into the best boyfriends ever. In Ace, though, she’s met with surly resistance and a sizzling attraction she doesn’t expect. Fixing this wounded warrior will be her biggest challenge yet. Not falling for him will be even harder.

Between her big heart and his damaged one, a battle is ensuing. In this game of love, every defense will crumble.

Book Review

Sweet. Sassy. Smart. Drop-dead, panty-melting sexy. Five stars worth of fun and feeling.

A hot quarterback with an attitude. A sweet southern beauty with a heart of pure gold…who’s also the coach’s daughter….

Ace Anderson, a college champion quarterback, is cocky on the outside, and more than a little damaged on the inside. He’s got a nasty reputation, on and off the field. Transferring to a new campus, with a new coach, is his one last chance to put it all behind, his last hope for turning his NFL dreams into a future. If he wants it bad enough to work for it. As for commitment to anyone or anything else? Not gonna happen.

Bryant Johnson, a young woman of both soul and substance, knows she can fix him; after all, that’s what she does, semester after semester. She works relationship miracles, turning hopeless cases into model boyfriends, one former bad boy at a time. Without getting involved. Ever. Ace presents a special challenge, in more ways than one. But if her father, the Southern University Renegades’ coach, has a chance to win a championship at last, she’ll win Ace over, fix him, and set him free with no regrets.

Right? Not exactly.

That’s what you’ll find out when you pick up Downed, the latest standalone novel in the Gridiron series by Jen Frederick. It’s a story full of heart, packed with southern charm and characters you’ll love. It’s funny; it’s hot; it’s occasionally painful; but most of all it’s hopeful without being cliché, thoughtful in ways you won’t necessarily expect; and sexy enough to warm you from the inside out, time and time again.

If you’ve read any of the other books in the series, you’ve met Ace before, and you probably hate him — with good reason. It’s even a better reason to read Downed, which is truly a redemptive romance … and not just for Ace, the jerk; but for Bryant, the strong, smart, sensitive young woman who needs to overcome fears from her past to embrace the possibilities in her future.

When it comes to sports romance, Jen Frederick never disappoints. I enjoyed every scene. It’s perfectly paced and seamlessly written in alternating points of view, with enough drama and conflict to hold your interest, offset by moments of pure joy and college humor that will have you laughing out loud. Altogether, it’s a fun read and my personal favorite of the series thus far.

Indulge yourself this football season with this and the other standalones in the Gridiron series. You can thank me later.

My Review — 5 Blazing Stars…

When you love a book this much, it’s hard to know where to begin, or how to do it justice. I’ve actually struggled with this review because the book had an unusual effect on me – it took me to some dark places I didn’t want to go, made me laugh, made me cry, then left me hanging, absolutely addicted.

First let me say that Paper Princess is not for everyone. It’s a young adult novel with very mature themes. It can be dark and disturbing in ways you don’t expect. The struggles, both internal and external, are painful to witness. If you’ve ever been ‘the new girl’ in a new school at a tender age; if you’ve ever been bullied because you’re ‘different;’ if you’ve ever fallen – hard – for someone who isn’t good for you, who leads you on, and leaves you desolate; if you’ve ever lived on the wrong side of the tracks, the victim of assumptions about what you are because of where you’re from or what you’ve done … this book will resonate deeply and leave a lasting impression. It will make you angry. But most important – it will make you care. And it will make you appreciate the strength of the young heroine who finds herself caught up in a life she didn’t ask for, and isn’t sure she wants. If you’re open-minded, you will also care, deeply, about her guardian, Callum, and his five boys, because they are in a deep, dysfunctional struggle with grief – and no one is winning.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger, and it will KILL you. But unless you are completely opposed to delaying gratification, don’t let it stop you from reading this deeply thoughtful story with a finale that holds so much potential.  Yes, I walked around with my ‘cliffhanger’ face on for a couple of days, and a book hangover that wouldn’t let up, but it only made me want to read the next book more. On a scale of 1 to 10…my anticipation is a solid 15. I believe in happy ever afters, and I believe in these two authors – this is an incredible collaboration and I look forward to more of the Royals, the sooner the better.

Q&A with Erin Watt, about Paper Princess…

Q: Is this really a YA?

We recommend this for young adult readers, age 17 and up. We think it’s a book that will appeal to older teens and those adults who are in touch with their inner teen, like us.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger? I’ve heard there’s an awful cliffhanger! Why’d you write a cliffhanger?

We promise that we didn’t set out to write a cliffhanger, but Paper Princess does end in one. The good news is that the next book is up for pre-sale and it will be released July 25, 2016.
