Five months in, NHL forward Ryan Wesley is having a record-breaking rookie season. He’s living his dream of playing pro hockey and coming home every night to the man he loves–Jamie Canning, his longtime best friend turned boyfriend. There’s just one problem: the most important relationship of his life is one he needs to keep hidden, or else face a media storm that will eclipse his success on the ice.

Jamie loves Wes. He really, truly does. But hiding sucks. It’s not the life Jamie envisioned for himself, and the strain of keeping their secret is taking its toll. It doesn’t help that his new job isn’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped, but he knows he can power through it as long as he has Wes. At least apartment 10B is their retreat, where they can always be themselves.

Or can they? When Wes’s noisiest teammate moves in upstairs, the threads of their carefully woven lie begin to unravel. With the outside world determined to take its best shot at them, can Wes and Jamie develop major-league relationship skills on the fly?

Warning: contains sexual situations, a vibrating chair, long-distance sexy times, and proof that hockey players look hot in any shade of green.

Us - A Photo Quote from the novel by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

My Review

Us (Him, #2)Us by Sarina Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are no words … and there aren’t enough stars in any rating system to express how much I adore this series. I am rarely without words, but I love these books and their characters so much it’s almost painful to try and write a review that does the series justice. Him, book 1, rocked my world. I knew Us would be great – it couldn’t be anything but, given its talented authors and beautiful storyline. But I have to say it went so far beyond my expectations I was left with a book hangover and couldn’t start another book for days. In the meantime, I read the series again. And then again. It raises the bar on the genre to a dizzying height.

How do you improve on the love affair that began in Him (#1 in the series)? You take two soulmates who love each other, and put them in the most challenging situation possible: a demanding life, full of media scrutiny, long road trips, and all too brief stolen moments, and add the pressure of success; then cover it in a thin veil of secrecy. You mix in two passionate, obstinate, idealistic young men – and take away the one thing that’s always bonded them, even before they became a couple – easy, open, straightforward communication. In their misguided efforts to keep their relationship on a pedestal – each young man chooses to face his inner demons and his external conflicts alone. Unspoken feelings simmer, confusion moves in, and resentment slowly grows. It’s relationship cancer, and it takes its toll. Eventually, it all boils over – in the worst possible way.

They know they belong together, but at what cost? Brace yourself – it’s not easy, but it’s so, so worth it. So grab a few tissues, and have faith in these two beautiful souls. Once you take this emotional journey with them, you will only love them more. Their connection to each other wavers from time to time, but when it’s good … it’s more than good. It’s perfect. It will leave you feeling like your heart just might burst.

Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy are popular, bestselling sports romance authors in their own right, and I love everything they’ve published separately. But together they make living, breathing, absolutely unforgettable stories – bordering on literary magic; and I hope there will be many, many more love stories such as this in their future. I’ve grown to love Jamie and Wes, but also their teammates, friends, and the Canning Clan. I certainly hope there’s a sequel — ok, more than one — yet to come. I’m just not ready to say goodbye.

HIM

They don’t play for the same team. Or do they?

Photo of the cover of HIM, by Sarina Bowen and Elle KennedyJamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship. Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever.

Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—
can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it? When Wesley turns up to coach alongside Jamie for one more hot summer at camp, Jamie has a few things to discover about his old friend…and a big one to learn about himself.

Warning: contains sexual situations, hotties on hockey skates, skinny-dipping, shenanigans in an SUV and proof that coming out to your family on social media is a dicey proposition.

Synopsis

He knows how to score, on and off the ice.

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over.

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

My Review

What did I love about The Score? Everything – so much that it’s hard to know where to begin. I’ve loved this series since Book 1, The Deal. I didn’t think I could enjoy Book 2, The Mistake, even more – but I did. Then again, heroes Garrett and Logan were pretty easy to love; they were funny, sweet, hot, handsome hockey jocks, with just a little bit of bad-boy – and they had some major emotional obstacles to overcome. But Dean Di Laurentis, the ultimate rich, spoiled, sarcastic, oversexed college “frat boy”?  The over-confident, utterly self-absorbed hockey star? Not so much. Dean was more or less comic relief in the first two books – famous for his witty one-liners, his very public sexual antics and his reputation as a serious man-whore. I didn’t expect to like him until he proved himself worthy of it, but…

…I was wrong again. There are reasons – good reasons – for Dean’s casual, devil-may-care approach to life. He knows college won’t last forever, so he lives very much in the moment, taking advantage of every opportunity (and every willing woman) that comes his way. His family is wealthy and well-connected, so he’s never had to wait, or want, for anything. He’s intelligent — although he pretends not to be, he’s coasting through his senior year, headed for law school in the fall. He has a real talent for hockey, he loves the thrill of the game – but he isn’t as passionate about it as Garrett and Logan, who are NHL-bound. He’s your basic party animal, and he likes it that way – flings without strings. Until he meets Allie.

The Score is Dean’s coming of age story. For a young man who’s never had to take his life too seriously, Dean is confronted with challenges he can’t overcome with charm, wit, intelligence, sexual prowess or good looks alone. As his relationship with Allie develops, he has to come to terms with what it means to put someone else’s needs above your own. He has to learn to accept responsibility and follow through when a coach he despises assigns him to help a fledgling youth hockey team find their way around the ice. And then comes the sentinel moment where he’s faced with a stunning loss for the first time in his life – and falls completely apart. Only a woman like Allie could have what it takes to know what to say, when to stay – and when to let go and let Dean find his own way back.  It’s an agonizing journey at times – but one that is also poignant and relatable.

This entire series is extraordinarily well written – an effortless read, a delightful escape into a fictional world where you have to work for the happy-ever-after, but you know you’ll be rewarded at the end. Actually, you’ll be rewarded all the way through because there is just the right balance of humor, angst, tenderness, and mild suspense – not to mention that the sexual encounters between Dean and Allie are off-the-charts hot. The beauty of the Off-Campus Series is that each book may be read as a standalone – but once you start, you will always want more. The characters become like family – you want to know their stories, and you never want to say goodbye. Fortunately, this time around we don’t have to say goodbye – because Tucker is next, and it’s sure to be a blast.
