Review

Dirty Rich Obsession: All Mine (Dirty Rich, #8)Dirty Rich Obsession: All Mine by Lisa Renee Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reid Maxwell is my favorite male character in the Dirty Rich series, and the reasons are all found in Lisa’s latest release, Dirty Rich Obsession: All Mine. I admit, I have a weakness for stunningly sexy, alpha, overprotective males with a dark side just under the surface, fueled by a dark secret or two — and Reid checks off all of those boxes. But it’s his deep vulnerability – the fear that drives the beast inside – that really gets to me, in the best possible way. It makes Reid Maxwell unforgettable. And if “unforgettable” is what Lisa was going for when she created him, she nailed it with this sequel.

The fact that he’s met his match in his equally strong heroine, Carrie West, makes it all the more rewarding for the reader. Carrie is a powerhouse in her own right, and that’s exactly what Reid’s character needs to ground him, to force him to face and overcome his personal demons, and to grow into the man he is meant to be by the end of this story. Together, they are unstoppable. There is never a question of IF they will find their HEA – only a question of how, and at what cost. And that makes the story compelling enough to keep turning page after page.

The story isn’t perfect – but it’s perfect enough. As an adrenaline junkie, I could have used a bit more mind-blowing, life-threatening suspense, but that’s just me. There is plenty of tension to drive the story forward, and plenty of heat to fuel your deepest, darkest fantasies. And, as always, the secondary characters – from the Dirty Rich series and the Walker Security series – add depth, some humor, and a comfortable sense of familiarity that has made these stories so popular with her fans.

Although Reid & Carrie’s two-part story may be read as a standalone, I believe you will enjoy it even more by reading the other books in this series in order. If you don’t want to do that, though, at least read Reese and Cat’s two-part story, Dirty Rich One Night Stand and Dirty Rich One Night Stand: Two Years Later. It will give you a better understanding of two important secondary characters and save you from a spoiler I stumbled across because I got behind in my Dirty Rich reading over the holidays! So treat yourself, take your time, and your patience will be rewarded over and over again.

I might never get enough of Reid, but I’m hoping for more of another character from this series – Reid’s brother Gabe, whose story is yet to be told – and I hope I don’t have to wait too long. I have a feeling he might be my next “new favorite” dirty-rich addiction.

About the Book…

A hot summer night is perfect for feeling your way in the dark…

For urban-legend hunter and television host Gabe Powers, it’s business—investigate the most notorious haunted places in Savannah. Then he meets his new sound engineer, a dewy Georgia peach who may just turn this gig into (im)pure pleasure. All it takes is one night for them to conjure floor-rattling, wall-banging moans…but they’re not from the ghosts.

Blame the rippling abs, the cocky swagger, the granite jawline, the whole muscle-bulging package, but Gabe is bringing out good-girl Lily Jameson’s dirty side. Damn her code-of-conduct contract—this isn’t just a molten-hot fling.

There’s just one kink in the relationship they’ve been avoiding: soon they’ll be going their separate ways. Lily’s home is in Savannah, and Gabe is a globe-trotter at heart. For them to be together, they’ll both have to upend their so-very-different worlds and face their fears in the process. And suddenly things don’t feel so Georgia peachy keen at all.

Excerpt

He wrapped his arms around me, sliding one hand up along the back of my neck to keep me close. Running his thumb down my cheek, he held my hair back from my face. The laughter and playfulness were gone. Now he was back where I’d seen him in the bedroom. Greedy and serious. His palm grasped my tush in a delightfully possessive way. “Ouija speaks the truth. I do want you. So bad.”

“Me too,” I whispered back, but then I realized how confusing that sounded. “I mean, I want you. Not I want—”

He kissed me to shut me up. His hands gripped my body, and his tongue swept mine aside. Straddling him on my knees on the sofa, I felt him hard underneath me. I tipped my hips into him, with nothing but my panties and his chinos between us. This kiss was different than the one in the bedroom earlier. This was like a slow drizzle of caramel all through me. Just as the room began to spin, and just as I started to reach for his belt, he broke us apart, pulling my head back slightly with his fingers knotted into my hair. He nudged my cheek with his nose and said, “I’m gonna take you upstairs, Lily. And rock your fucking world.”

My Review of Do You Feel It Too?

Do You Feel It Too?Do You Feel It Too? by Nicola Rendell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

There’s a lot to love about Do You Feel It Too?, the latest romantic comedy by favorite author Nicola Rendell. The premise is unique and fun, the setting is charming and mysterious, and the characters are perfectly paired to deliver a sweet, funny, quirky, sexy, surprising story that draws you in and captures your imagination from beginning to end.

Gabe is so charming, sweet and sexy he’s almost too perfect. And when he goes full-alpha, he takes your breath away. (Warning: that happens a LOT). When he takes care of Lily’s nephew for a night, you will laugh until you cry – and then your ovaries may explode, because is there anything more adorable and attractive than a guy bonding with a baby? I don’t think so.

Lily is more of a girl-next-door type who rarely, if ever, ventures too far out of her comfort zone. As the story develops, her relationship with Gabe forces her to confront the fears and insecurities that have held her back for far too long; to take risks, and in doing so, to unleash the strong, sexy woman hidden within. It’s a meaningful, beautiful, relatable journey.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention The General, an African Grey parrot Lily inherited from her grandmother. He is so cleverly written he steals the show in every scene that features him. His command of southern history and contemporary films is only surpassed by his timing and temperament. He is beyond delightful – he’s unforgettable.

I’m not a big fan of “insta-love,” but in a relatively short, fast-paced story such as this, it’s pretty much a given. However, the characters were so well developed it wasn’t entirely inconceivable. And the undercurrent of tension–“the ticking clock,” counting down the days until Gabe’s trip to Savannah would inevitably end — left just enough doubt about their future to keep me turning pages and hoping for that happy-ever-after. The moment of truth was so beautifully written it brought me to tears…and that doesn’t happen very often.

Altogether, Do You Feel It Too is a delightfully charming, sexy, funny story that delivers on every level. It’s escapism at its best, with humor, heat, and lots of heart. Don’t miss it.

My Review of Bittersweet

BittersweetBittersweet by Lyz Kelley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bittersweet is a beautiful story of two “lost” souls who find each other and, in doing so, begin the process of healing and becoming whole again. The theme is familiar, similar to others in the Elkridge series, and for continuity’s sake, the storylines overlap to some extent, but each book is unique, featuring interesting, well-developed characters that stay in your heart long after you’ve read the last page. And while I think Bittersweet could be read as a standalone novel, I recommend reading the series in order to fully appreciate the impact of this story and the contributions of its secondary characters to the reading experience.

Bittersweet is what I like to call a “cozy romance.” It’s warm and inviting, immersive yet easy to read. Lyz Kelly has a unique voice that infuses just the right amount of humor, heat, suspense, angst, and action to hold your interest. The reading experience itself is cozy, but the sometimes raw but always powerful emotions, plot twists, and edge-of-your-seat subplots keep you just enough on edge to keep you guessing until the end.

The Characters

Leza is a tough-as-nails former FBI agent, a survivor with a scarred body and a broken heart, looking to heal and make a home in the small town of Elkridge, Colorado – the same small town where her former lover Sam, the town’s sheriff, lost his life while investigating the same drug and sex trafficking operation she infiltrated and helped to bring down before turning in her badge for the final time.

Heath is a former Marine, scarred by the horrors of war in Afghanistan, who gave up his military career to raise his young niece, Ellie, following the tragic death of his sister. Overwhelmed by the changes in his life, struggling to make ends meet while parenting a grieving child, and studying for his new career as an Elkridge deputy, he is often exhausted, lonely, and more than a little bit lost.

Until he meets Leza, who piques his curiosity and almost immediately captures his heart.

The Conflict

Leza doesn’t want a relationship, especially with a man in uniform who could lose his life in the line of duty and force her to re-live the trauma of Sam’s death. Headstrong and stubborn, Leza is determined to make it on her own without letting anyone get too close – no matter how handsome and irresistible he is. Heath is ready to settle down and take a chance on loving Leza, and if he only had himself to worry about, he would happily do so. But he also knows he can’t risk bringing Leza fully into Ellie’s life – no matter how much he wants and needs her -until she is willing and able to stay.

Recommendation

Four Gold Stars

Bittersweet is a perfect title for this story. It is simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. Lyz delicately balances the hope and despair experienced by all three of its main characters. She captures and beautifully portrays the excitement of new love, and lovingly conveys the humor and tenderness of a tough Marine who is fumbling–and sometimes stumbling–as an exhausted, well-intentioned, but inexperienced single parent. She also accurately and relatably depicts the devastating emotional consequences of trauma and loss, coupled with the overwhelming fear of losing again.

If you are a fan of Emily March and Debbie Macomber, you will especially enjoy the approachable, relatable novels of the Elkridge and the Lonely Ridge series – and I highly recommend you read them all. With fall on the horizon, these are perfect stories to warm you on the inside and out.
