BEHIND CLOSED DOORS…

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love.

Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace’s friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call—so why doesn’t Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim?

And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

MY REVIEW: 5 TERRIFYING STARS

There are novels you can’t put down — and there are others you HAVE to put down simply to take your next breath and wrap your mind around the story. Behind Closed Doors is a genuinely terrifying, powerful, compelling thriller with relentless, mind-blowing suspense that was so intense I found myself walking away more than once. But it’s so well-written that once you engage in the story, you can’t help but hang on for dear life until the end. It’s an incredibly dark, twisted tale with an antagonist so deeply disturbed he will haunt you for days after you put it down. I don’t believe I’ve ever hated an antagonist more; nor could I find anything to redeem him, or any way to justify how he grew up to become his new wife’s ultimate nightmare.

The story is one of devious, calculated manipulation, from start to finish; a reminder that “if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.” The heroine, Grace, is held captive by the force of sheer terror, and a deep fear of what might happen to her vulnerable young sister, Millie, if she doesn’t comply with the demands of her deeply psychopathic husband. Outwardly, Jack Angel is a self-sacrificing, generous, charming, successful attorney who represents women in abusive relationships. He’s never lost a case, never shown a sign of weakness in his relentless pursuit of perfection. But behind closed doors, as the title implies, Jack is the personification of the pure evil all women fear…the monster behind the mask. Grace is powerless to expose him for what he truly is. He’s crossed every ‘T’ and dotted every ‘i’ in crafting the perfect scenario to keep her captive and take everything she loves away from her before it’s all over.

There is very little overt violence in the story, and although it deals with domestic abuse, it’s not of a sexual or violent nature. Rather, it’s the worst form of emotional torture and psychological terror imaginable. It’s the systematic, meticulous breakdown of the human spirit and the will to survive. It’s a carefully executed plan to instill helplessness and hopelessness in a victim to the point that she loses the desire and the capacity to fight back, and it appears flawless. The conclusion seems to be obvious. But is it? That’s the question that will keep you reading long into the night.

Behind Closed Doors is a debut novel well worth reading. It is incredibly, frightfully plausible, with an intensity unmatched by any other contemporary thriller I’ve read this year…or last. While frequently compared to Gone Girl, it goes beyond in delivering a flawlessly executed, heart-pounding conclusion. It taunts, teases, twists and lingers in the mind for days. It may be intensely difficult to read, and seem impossible to finish with your sanity intact. Fortunately, despite the psychological cruelty portrayed in the story, the tenacity of the heroine gives the reader hope and a reason to believe that she will prevail before it’s too late to escape a fate worse than death.

Readers, be warned; this is a no-holds-barred thriller that will haunt you for days – perhaps weeks. But I guarantee, you’ll never forget it. If you love stories that drag you to hell and back, give you hope, then snatch it away until you think you can’t stand the tension anymore…don’t wait to check out Behind Closed Doors. It’s a knock-out.
