 My Review ~ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Samantha Whitney was thrown into Hell and left for dead at the hands of a serial rapist and murderer.  Formerly a successful, sassy, sexy college senior, she is now in a near-catatonic state, facing a long and painful physical recovery, with deep emotional and psychological scars that may never heal. She’s completely broken ~ in body, mind, heart, soul and spirit. As she enters a residential treatment facility for rape victims, she is faced with two choices:  surrender to the person she has become, or find within her the strength to be a survivor. She chooses the latter. Pieces for You is her story.  And it is simply a stunning read, from cover to cover.

Pieces for You builds on a storyline established in Book 1 of the series, Only for You. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, had I read it without its “prequel” I would have had to stop and go back for answers to important questions that only the first book can provide, and for insight into the characters that support Sam in her journey back from the brink. Those relationships are her links to her past, and the healing path to her future. Understanding them deepens the story and connects the reader in a more personal way than would be possible if read as a stand-alone. Additionally, although brutally described in book 1, knowing the atrocities Sam endured at the hands of her would-be murderer is essential to truly appreciate her battle to rebuild her life with the “pieces” of herself that remain. The author beautifully illustrates and helps the reader appreciate the patience, love, commitment and heartache experienced by her best friends – Everleigh, Hunter, and Griffin – as they tirelessly help her come to terms with what she has lost, and find her way back.

Griffin Evenson, owner-manager of The Stop, an off-campus hangout, is truly the knight in shining armor here. Introduced in Only for You, he fell quietly in love with Sam long before the assault. He blames himself for not protecting her, although he never had a chance. When he re-enters her life, he does so with a fervent desire to be her safe harbor and a healing presence; she is “the one”; he hopes for more. But he also knows that she may never see him that way, and that if he reveals how far he has gone to ensure her survival, he could lose her forever. When Sam finds herself again threatened by her past – while still traumatized in the present – Griffin uses every resource he has to see that those who have destroyed her, or who would destroy her again, are dealt justice, one way or the other.  I promise no spoilers here. All I can say is that I liked him in Only for You, and I absolutely adored him in the sequel.

Pieces for You has everything I look for and love in a book: a compelling story, extraordinarily engaging and well-developed characters; witty dialogue with humor that made me laugh out loud; uncertainty and heart-pounding suspense; tasteful, beautifully-written, tender yet steamy love scenes; tear-jerking losses; all tempered with hope, heart, and incredible courage.  The depth of understanding and compassion that Ms. Rulon reveals as she bravely describes the experience of women who have lived through their worst nightmare – a nightmare every woman on earth can relate to – made the story frighteningly real, and Sam’s struggle for survival even more poignant.

After I finished Pieces for You, I sat stunned and speechless for awhile.  It is powerful and completely unique, exposing painful truths about the lasting trauma of sexual assault and its impact beyond its intended victim.  Once again, the quotes that Ms. Rulon selected to illustrate the truths revealed in each chapter added so much that I couldn’t wait to see how they reinforced the story as it unfolded and added immeasurably to the reader’s experience.  The choice of fonts, illustrations, and the addition of Griffin’s point of view sets this story apart from other books of this genre.

I enthusiastically recommend Pieces for You as a must-read, without reservation.  If I’m right, the stage has been set for book #3, and I will look forward to more of these wonderful characters from this outstanding author.
