Synopsis

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor–a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

My Review — 5 Blazing Stars…

When you love a book this much, it’s hard to know where to begin, or how to do it justice. I’ve actually struggled with this review because the book had an unusual effect on me – it took me to some dark places I didn’t want to go, made me laugh, made me cry, then left me hanging, absolutely addicted.

First let me say that Paper Princess is not for everyone. It’s a young adult novel with very mature themes. It can be dark and disturbing in ways you don’t expect. The struggles, both internal and external, are painful to witness. If you’ve ever been ‘the new girl’ in a new school at a tender age; if you’ve ever been bullied because you’re ‘different;’ if you’ve ever fallen – hard – for someone who isn’t good for you, who leads you on, and leaves you desolate; if you’ve ever lived on the wrong side of the tracks, the victim of assumptions about what you are because of where you’re from or what you’ve done … this book will resonate deeply and leave a lasting impression. It will make you angry. But most important – it will make you care. And it will make you appreciate the strength of the young heroine who finds herself caught up in a life she didn’t ask for, and isn’t sure she wants. If you’re open-minded, you will also care, deeply, about her guardian, Callum, and his five boys, because they are in a deep, dysfunctional struggle with grief – and no one is winning.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger, and it will KILL you. But unless you are completely opposed to delaying gratification, don’t let it stop you from reading this deeply thoughtful story with a finale that holds so much potential.  Yes, I walked around with my ‘cliffhanger’ face on for a couple of days, and a book hangover that wouldn’t let up, but it only made me want to read the next book more. On a scale of 1 to 10…my anticipation is a solid 15. I believe in happy ever afters, and I believe in these two authors – this is an incredible collaboration and I look forward to more of the Royals, the sooner the better.

Q&A with Erin Watt, about Paper Princess…

Q: Is this really a YA?

We recommend this for young adult readers, age 17 and up. We think it’s a book that will appeal to older teens and those adults who are in touch with their inner teen, like us.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger? I’ve heard there’s an awful cliffhanger! Why’d you write a cliffhanger?

We promise that we didn’t set out to write a cliffhanger, but Paper Princess does end in one. The good news is that the next book is up for pre-sale and it will be released July 25, 2016.

Always a passionate reader and a somewhat more casual writer, Paula Radell started her first book review and promotions blog, Curl Up and Read, in September of 2013. In early 2014, she left a career in nursing to become a freelance project management consultant. She also turned her part-time hobby into a full-time passion by becoming a freelance editor, publicist, and a hopeful author. She is a Goodreads Librarian, Group Moderator, and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. She has also taken advanced internet and social media marketing certificate courses at the University of San Francisco. Born and raised near the beaches of southeastern Virginia, Paula now lives in Mendocino County, California with her husband Ray, a couple of stray tabby cats, Matthew & Diana, and a 2-year old rescue Greyhound, Willow. When she is not catering to the dog’s every whim, touring and tasting the latest California sparkling wine vintages with Ray, or sitting in Starbucks reading a great book, you can find Paula at her laptop – writing, editing, reviewing or avidly promoting the books and authors she loves. Two releases are planned in the coming year: Where Angels Lie, a dark romance; and an inspirational novella (name still under debate).
