AN EXCERPT FROM TWO YEARS LATER

CAT…

“Cat, I’m not guilty.”

“I know.”

“You don’t,” he says, his voice hard now. “I feel that in you now.” He squeezes his eyes shut. “Damn it.”

“I trust you, Reese, but the idea that other people might not, feels weird which is probably why I just want to shut this down. It’s about control. I’d have some kind of control I don’t have right now but it’s not your fault. We need to end this. Your career matters.”

He lowers me to the couch, and comes down on top of me, like he needs to hold me in place to keep me from running. “You matter. Only you.”

“Your career matters,” I repeat. “It matters to you and me. It matters to us and our future. It matters to our future family. Pay her off.”

“Our family?”

“Yes. Our family, Reese. We want one. Don’t we?”

“Yes, sweetheart. We do.”

“Then let’s go downstairs and end this.”

“Not yet,” he says. “I’m not ready. We’re not ready.”

“We are ready. We’re strong together. We need to show that strength now.”

“You’re strong,” he says. “So damn strong, Cat, and I swore when you said ‘I do’ I’d keep you from having to be that strong. I’m supposed to protect you.”

“We protect each other.”

“I need to feel you right now,” he says, his mouth closing down on mine, a deep drugging lick of his tongue stroking against mine, possessiveness, passion, and something I’ve never felt in Reese in that kiss: desperation and fear. He’s afraid of losing me and I feel that same fear, for no reason. We’re in love. We’re happy. That isn’t going to change because of these allegations.

REESE…

I kiss my wife, who is my life, and I will let no one take her from me. I want her to know this. I want her to feel, not just hear, how much I love her, and yet, there is a rage of anger inside me I need to bury and control. I have to go downstairs and act like I’m king of the fucking world when everything I love is right here in this room, and delicate, too damn delicate. As surely as I think those words, though, Cat bites my lips, and not gently. “Get out of whatever place you are in your head,” she demands. “Right now. I know what you need, so use me.”

“I never use you, Cat.”

“I use you,” she says. “Every time I need out of my own head, I drive you to the edge until you fuck me the way I want to be fucked. Until you make me forget and,” she grabs the lapels of my jacket, “stop what you’re doing right now. Stop acting like we’re different because that makes me think things that I didn’t think before, that I know aren’t true, but you’re scaring me. You’re making me think this is going to change us.”

“It’s not,” I say roughly. “I’m just angry.”

“Then be angry. Deal with it, with me. Show me.”

I don’t need to be pushed any further. I need her. My mouth closes down on hers, my tongue licking into her mouth in a deep, hungry kiss, and I let her taste everything I feel. My fear of losing her, and us. The gut-wrenching moment I heard the allegations against me. Just thinking about how that must have affected Cat, gutted me. Just thinking about her actually believing it, tore me apart. And some part of her has to doubt. It’s human. I don’t want her to doubt.

I tear my mouth from hers. “You’re all I need. You’re what I needed before I even knew I needed it.” I kiss her again and then raise up on my knees to shrug out of my jacket, tugging away my tie and tossing them both. I’m back with Cat in all of sixty seconds, kissing her again, my hand caressing her waist, reaching up to cup her breast.

She arches into my touch and while moments ago, I just needed inside her, the anger in me refocuses on the here and now, and Cat. It’s all Cat. I want her to moan for me. I want her to come for me. I want and want where she is concerned, and she needs to feel that now.

About The Bastard…

Front Cover of The Bastard by Lisa Renee JonesI’m the bastard child, son to the mistress, my father’s backup heir to the Kingston empire. He sent me to Harvard. I left and became a Navy SEAL, but I’m back now, and I finished school on my own dime. I’m now a few months from being a billionaire myself. I don’t need my father’s company or his love. My “brother” can have it. I will never go back there. I will never be the mistake my father made, the way he was the mistake my mother made.

And then she walks in the door, the princess I’d once wanted more than I’d wanted my father’s love. She wants me to come back. She says my father needs to be saved. I don’t want to save my father but I do want her. Deeply. Passionately. More than I want anything else.

But she’s The Princess and I’m The Bastard. We don’t fit. We don’t belong together and yet she says that she needs me. We’re like sugar and spice, we don’t mix, but I really crave a taste. Just one. What harm can just one taste do?

Sneak Preview!  An EXCERPT from The Bastard…

“This is a bad idea,” she whispers, but her voice is raspy, affected, the taste of her hunger damn near on my tongue.

I kiss her, a quick brush of lips, and a lick that has the heat between us damn near explosive. “Still think it’s a bad idea?”

Her hands flatten on my chest but they flex rather than push. “We both know this is wrong.”

“And yet you followed me here.”

“You said that already,”

“You knew what would happen,” I accuse.

“I was angry.”

I certainly know where anger and family collide, in ways I won’t explain to anyone. My jaw sets hard and I release her, putting a wide step between us. “Stay or go, but if you stay, you’re going to end up naked.”

“I know your father’s an asshole, but my mother loves him and my father’s company is now a part of this one.”

“The part where I said that if you stayed, you’d end up naked.” I reach for her and pull her to me. “You did understand that, correct?”

“I don’t scare off that easily. If I did, I wouldn’t be working for your father and under your brother.”

“It’s me I want you under,” I say, molding her close, my hands sliding up her back.

“I’m too young and stupid for business, but I’m just right to fuck?” she challenges.

“I’m warning you, Harper, not talking down to you. And if you’re young and stupid, so was I.”

“You wanted to be here,” she says.

“Yes,” I say, tangling my fingers into her hair. “I wanted to be here, just like I want to be right here, right now, with you.” My mouth closes down on hers once more, a deep thrust of tongue that’s as unforgiving as my father would be if it came down to choosing her or Isaac. It’s all about demand and I expect her to push back, to give me the rejection that sends her to the door and me to the fucking airport. That’s not what I get.

Her hand on my chest doesn’t push me away. She moans and her elbow softens, those perfect curves I’d admired from a distance now pressed nice and close, right up to the moment she jerks back. “My God. What are we doing? You’re my stepbrother.”

I walk her back against the wall, my hands caressing up her ribcage to cup her breasts. “I told you,” I say, stroking my thumbs over her nipples. “I’m not your fucking brother. Not now. Not ever.” I cup her face, lean in and my mouth finds her mouth, and if she thought my tongue unforgiving before now, she was wrong. This is unforgiving. It’s in my blood. It’s who I am, who I was born to be. A bastard who wants her.

I have this sudden need that consumes me. I shove my hand into the top of her dress, fingering her nipple. She makes this soft, sexy sound that has my cock twitching, expanding beneath my zipper. As if she knows, she presses her hand to my crotch and holy fuck, I need inside this woman. I push off the wall and shrug out of my jacket, my gaze raking over the tops of her breasts. Her teeth scrape her bottom lip, and I want that mouth on my body. I want my mouth on her body.

I toss the jacket, rip away my tie, and she doesn’t run away as I half expect she will. She closes the space between us, her fingers on my buttons, working them down my shirt, but when one hand slides down to my crotch, I react. I slow things down before I fuck her and this is over, and when it is, I’m gone. Suddenly I’m not ready to leave, which is why I turn her to the wall, and force her hands to its surface, yanking down her zipper before I pull my shirt over my head. I step into her, my erection at her backside, my lips at her ear.

“You saw me watching you across the pool,” I say, my fingers catching the straps at her shoulders.

“Of course I saw you. You wanted me to see you.”

“Yes. I did. I wanted you to know I wanted to fuck you.” I shove the straps of her dress down her arms. “I wanted you to know I wanted you naked.” I pull the dress down, and with no bra to contend with I have it down her hips and to her feet. I lift her and kick it away, taking a moment to appreciate just how perfect her heart-shaped ass is before I turn her to face me.

My fingers tangle in her hair and I pull her to me. “And since you’re here,” I add, “I will assume you got that message loud and clear.”

“I’m still angry and you’re still an arrogant asshole, but apparently it doesn’t matter, so fuck me before I come to my senses.”

I press my cheek to hers, my hand on her cheek, lips by her ear. “I promise to use my tongue in all the right places to make sure you have no regrets.”

She pants out a breath that tells me my words affect her and I’m right there when she does, kissing her again, drinking her in, and damn she tastes good; one part innocence, one part a drug that knows how good it feels. And she does feel so fucking good.

I scoop her up and carry her through the living area to the bedroom, because hell, I don’t know, it just feels like I should fuck her on the bed, though I could have easily kept her right there by the door. I want this woman. I want her in a bad way and I wanted her from the moment I saw her by that pool. I set her on her feet and I pull her close. “This is where I lick and you come on my tongue.”

My Review of The Bastard…

The Bastard (Filthy Duet, #1; Dirty Rich, #6)The Bastard by Lisa Renee Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Eric Mitchell is a filthy rich (heavy on the filthy) ex-Navy Seal, a Harvard grad, a tattooed alpha bad-boy, an intellectual savant, and the best friend and business partner of Grayson Bennett (from Dirty Rich Betrayal). He’s also the “bastard son” of Jeff Kingston–the patriarch of the powerful Kingston family–and the reluctant “spare heir” to their automotive dynasty. Having been shamed and shunned by the Kingstons since adolescence, Eric has no need of–and wants nothing to do with–his “family’s” fame or fortune. He’s convinced that the pain and shame of his past is well behind him; that is, until Harper Evans, Eric’s biggest regret and his greatest weakness, shows up at his office, begging for help.

Harper and Eric share a brief but unforgettable history – a passionate, all-consuming moment in time that brought them together and then just as quickly tore them apart. As much as he wants to keep Harper at a distance and let the Kingston dynasty go up in flames, he can’t resist her plea for help – and soon finds himself deep in a web of secrets and lies that threatens to destroy them both.

Once again, Lisa Renee Jones proves herself a master of erotic, romantic suspense, with a plot that will keep you guessing from beginning to end; powerful, passionate, well-developed characters; twists that grab you by the throat; and a cliffhanger that will leave you dangling over an emotional cliff in the best possible way. It’s an adrenaline rush that will feed your dark, sexy soul and leave you wanting more. And more. And more.

The good news is the conclusion is only a couple of months away and you can pre-order Book 2 today. The anticipation just might kill you, but as always, it’s totally worth it. I promise that your only regret will be waiting so long to download your copy of this sensual, suspenseful story.

My Review of Bittersweet

BittersweetBittersweet by Lyz Kelley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bittersweet is a beautiful story of two “lost” souls who find each other and, in doing so, begin the process of healing and becoming whole again. The theme is familiar, similar to others in the Elkridge series, and for continuity’s sake, the storylines overlap to some extent, but each book is unique, featuring interesting, well-developed characters that stay in your heart long after you’ve read the last page. And while I think Bittersweet could be read as a standalone novel, I recommend reading the series in order to fully appreciate the impact of this story and the contributions of its secondary characters to the reading experience.

Bittersweet is what I like to call a “cozy romance.” It’s warm and inviting, immersive yet easy to read. Lyz Kelly has a unique voice that infuses just the right amount of humor, heat, suspense, angst, and action to hold your interest. The reading experience itself is cozy, but the sometimes raw but always powerful emotions, plot twists, and edge-of-your-seat subplots keep you just enough on edge to keep you guessing until the end.

The Characters

Leza is a tough-as-nails former FBI agent, a survivor with a scarred body and a broken heart, looking to heal and make a home in the small town of Elkridge, Colorado – the same small town where her former lover Sam, the town’s sheriff, lost his life while investigating the same drug and sex trafficking operation she infiltrated and helped to bring down before turning in her badge for the final time.

Heath is a former Marine, scarred by the horrors of war in Afghanistan, who gave up his military career to raise his young niece, Ellie, following the tragic death of his sister. Overwhelmed by the changes in his life, struggling to make ends meet while parenting a grieving child, and studying for his new career as an Elkridge deputy, he is often exhausted, lonely, and more than a little bit lost.

Until he meets Leza, who piques his curiosity and almost immediately captures his heart.

The Conflict

Leza doesn’t want a relationship, especially with a man in uniform who could lose his life in the line of duty and force her to re-live the trauma of Sam’s death. Headstrong and stubborn, Leza is determined to make it on her own without letting anyone get too close – no matter how handsome and irresistible he is. Heath is ready to settle down and take a chance on loving Leza, and if he only had himself to worry about, he would happily do so. But he also knows he can’t risk bringing Leza fully into Ellie’s life – no matter how much he wants and needs her -until she is willing and able to stay.

Recommendation

Four Gold Stars

Bittersweet is a perfect title for this story. It is simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. Lyz delicately balances the hope and despair experienced by all three of its main characters. She captures and beautifully portrays the excitement of new love, and lovingly conveys the humor and tenderness of a tough Marine who is fumbling–and sometimes stumbling–as an exhausted, well-intentioned, but inexperienced single parent. She also accurately and relatably depicts the devastating emotional consequences of trauma and loss, coupled with the overwhelming fear of losing again.

If you are a fan of Emily March and Debbie Macomber, you will especially enjoy the approachable, relatable novels of the Elkridge and the Lonely Ridge series – and I highly recommend you read them all. With fall on the horizon, these are perfect stories to warm you on the inside and out.
