BURN, by Dawn Altieri: New Release Excerpt, Guest Post, and Giveaway!

Tour Banner for Burn, by Dawn Altieri

Introducing BURN, a hot romance in more ways than one,

by author Dawn Altieri!

Meet Dawn Altieri:

A lifelong resident of northern New Jersey, Dawn Altieri has been scribbling stories practically since birth. After reaching a milestone birthday (she won’t say which one), she figured it was about time she took a shot at writing professionally.

With an overactive imagination and a slightly twisted mind, she enjoys reading dark and dangerous tales almost as much as writing them. When she’s not curled up on the sofa with her laptop, her latest story, a box of chocolates and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day), she can be found volunteering in the world of animal rescue. She shares her home with her husband and daughter, and a menagerie of rescued fur-babies.

About BURN:

Chloe Addison is on the verge of a promising career in real estate development until an explosion destroys her first major project and casts suspicion on her in an arson investigation. Her career is suddenly at risk—and possibly her life.

Firefighter Ryan Monroe wants a spot on the arson team, and getting close to Chloe might be the best way to solve his first investigation. Despite a painful past of his own, Ryan has dedicated himself to saving people, and when he realizes Chloe is in danger, she’s no exception. He just might be the perfect guy to rescue her, but their attraction could bring them both down in flames.

Excerpt:

Losing Chloe was not an option.

Ryan ignored Jeremy’s calls as he approached the warehouse. Ignored the chief’s voice over the transmitter clipped to his shoulder. He wasn’t supposed to enter a fire scene without instructions from the chief. Wasn’t supposed to break off on his own to go inside. He also wasn’t supposed to fall in love with someone he’d just met.

But he had.

He had to find her, get her to safety and make things right between them. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and there was no way he was going to lose her now.

The enormous main stockroom was heavily engulfed. Several of the higher windows had already blown out in the explosion, and flames and smoke billowed through the shattered remains to escape. Flames and smoke that could have already killed Chloe.

He couldn’t think like that. He’d been trained not to, to focus on the task at hand and not be distracted by his emotions. But all his training seemed to be flying out the window like those flames. He raised his Halligan tool and smashed the lower window.

“Monroe,” Chief Flanagan shouted over the transmitter again, “I order you not to enter the structure until Truck Company has completed roof operations. Do you read me? Do not advance!”

He swung the tool again with relentless determination. She could be trapped somewhere with the fire dancing closer each second, could be fighting to break free as the flames licked at her porcelain skin and left it singed with permanent scars like the ones that haunted him every day. Soon the smoke would strangle her, making the sting of her last breaths tortuously painful. And the heat. God, the heat…

He had to find her, had to reach her before it all happened. He knocked the last shards of glass from the window frame as Jeremy caught up to him.

Jeremy’s crushing hold on his shoulder halted his movements. “Roger that, Chief. I got him.” Jeremy turned Ryan to face him, staring him straight in the eye. “Not yet,” he warned, refusing to let Ryan go. “Listen to me. I know you want to tear in there and get her, and we will. But you need to calm down and do this right or you’re gonna get us all killed, you understand me? I’ll throw you the fuck out of here if I have to.”

Ryan glared at Jeremy, tempted to punch the living shit out of him to escape his grip. But Jeremy was right. The chief was right. He had to wait. If he ran in before the truckies had vented the roof and drawn the fire in the opposite direction, he’d jeopardize not only Chloe’s life, but his own life, and the lives of the crew, and he could kiss his career goodbye. Yet it was only a matter of time before the fire reached her, the building collapsed further, or the smoke-filled whatever room she was in and she ran out of air.

“Fuck!” He doubled over with his hands on his knees. How the hell was this happening again?

Fifteen Fun Facts:

A Guest Post by Dawn Altieri

  1. BURN is my first novel. Unless you count that baby kidnapper story I started writing in junior high and never finished. Or that rock-star girlfriend tale I wove in high school. Or the one I never finished writing during college, about the mom haunted by the infant daughter she lost. Or the story of the detective who falls for the victim of a crime he’s trying to solve. Or… Okay, BURN is probably my sixteenth or seventeenth novel, but who’s counting?
  2. During college, I was a DJ at Seton Hall University’s heavy metal radio station, WSOU in New Jersey. A good friend nick-named my late-night shift “The Dawn of the Dead Show.”
  3. Chloe Addison, the heroine of BURN, was named after my friend Nancy’s cat.
  4. I’ve had jobs in retail, food service, child care, advertising, graphic design and the printing industry. None of those positions hold a candle to being a writer.
  5. In my head, the part of BURN’s Ryan Monroe is played by Charlie Hunnam. His understudy is Justin Hartley from “This is Us.”
  6. I’ve had seven cats and three dogs in my lifetime, though not all at once. People close to me—who know my love for animals—are often shocked at how low that number is.
  7. I’ve had a girl crush on Jennifer Aniston ever since the first episode of Friends. Maybe it’s the hair, maybe it’s the string of romantic comedies, maybe it’s because she’s been married to not one but two of the hottest men in Hollywood. I don’t know. I just love her.
  8. Also in my head, the part of BURN’s Lieutenant Jeremy Hurst is played by David Gandy. I know, I know… Jeremy’s younger than David, Jeremy’s more arrogant than David, Jeremy does not speak with a British accent. But wouldn’t Gandy look great in nothing but a pair of bunker pants and suspenders???
  9. I did a lot of online research regarding arson techniques while I was writing BURN. I may very well be on some sort of FBI watch list.
  10. I am an extreme introvert. But then again, aren’t all writers?
  11. I could live on chocolate alone. Especially dark chocolate. With raspberries.
  12. While I was writing Burn, I often found myself with Ellie Goulding’s song “Burn” stuck in my head. Like, really often.
  13. I can name almost any classic rock or heavy metal song in less than ten seconds.
  14. I’ll be writing Jeremy’s story next. Or maybe Zack’s. No, Jeremy’s. You’ll just have to wait and see.
  15. I have so many story ideas in my head, I’m not sure what to write first. And that’s a good problem to have!

An EXCERPT from BETRAYED BY LIES

SAM

She shakes her head and laughs. “I don’t judge. It sounds to me like your therapy has helped you see what it is you need versus what you thought you wanted, and I’m so happy you’ve recovered from your injury and you’re able to return to work. So many agents aren’t as lucky as you.” There’s a spark of sadness in her eyes. A look that only the friends and family of those in law enforcement get when they think of those who aren’t as fortunate as I am.

I nod in agreement. “Which is why I was excited to take this opportunity here in L.A. with your brother. He’s giving me another chance to prove myself. California is a fresh start for me.” I smile at her and she smiles in return, and it’s soft, caring, and does things to me that I’m not sure I’m ready for.

“So what do you do?” I ask, turning the questions on her. I’m done spilling my garbage. I want to hear about her.

She drops her eyes from mine and takes another drink of wine before resting it on her thigh. “I’m an attorney. I do corporate law, mostly negotiating and reviewing contracts. It’s extremely boring to someone who’s not interested in legalese, but it keeps me busy and it pays well.” She shrugs.

“Do you ever end up in court?”

“No. Ironically, if there is ever litigation, we typically hire outside counsel. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?” She scrunches her nose up and smiles.

“Not really.” I shake my head. “I get why. You’re an expert at what you do. The attorneys you hire are experts in litigation. Everyone does what they do best.”

“Exactly.”

Our conversation slows, but it’s not uncomfortable in the silence. We both relax in the quiet and just ‘be.’ There’s something to be said for that level of comfort when you’re in the presence of someone else.

“So, when do you think you’ll be moving in?” she asks.

“I’m having some stuff delivered this weekend, so I hope Saturday is okay?” I raise my eyebrow at her, hoping it’s not an inconvenience.

She smiles. “Saturday is perfect.”

“I’m still waiting on a truck from Phoenix, so that’ll be sometime next week, but I’m ready to get out of that hotel. Speaking of that hotel, I really should get going. It’s getting late, and I didn’t mean to keep you up.” I stand up and she follows suit. We both carry our empty glass and beer bottle to the kitchen, and Kate swipes something off the center island.

“This is the key for the house.” She dangles the ring on her pointer finger. “You can have your alarm system installed anytime. If you need anything secured before then, I have a safe and an alarm on this house. You’re welcome to keep anything in here.”

“I appreciate that.” The soft tips of her fingers brush against my palm as she places the key in my hand.

“See you Saturday,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

“See you Saturday,” I return. For the first time in a long time, I have something to look forward to.

Provocative

(White Lies Book One)

by Lisa Renee Jones

Release Date:  April 18th

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Provocative Final Border 4.07.17 PM

Book one in the sexy and intense new White Lies duet by Lisa Renee Jones!

There are those moments in life that are provocative in their very existences, that embed in our minds forever, and sometimes our very souls. They change us, mold us, maybe even save us. But some are darker, dangerous. If we allow them to, they control us. Seduce us. Quite possibly even destroy us.

The moment I walked into Sonoma’s Reid Winter Winery and Vineyard and made eye contact with Faith Winter for the first time was one of those moments. Provocative because I know at least one of her secrets, of which, I suspect she has many. Provocative because she believes I was a stranger to her when we met, but I am not. Provocative because I sought her out, with no intention of touching her. But now I have. Now I want her. Now I have to have her. But that changes nothing. It doesn’t change why I came for her.

My Review of PROVOCATIVE

Provocative (White Lies Duet Book 1)Provocative by Lisa Renee Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nick Rogers:
A hot, take-no-prisoners, alpha male attorney — nicknamed “Tiger” because he won’t hesitate to rip out his opponent’s throat. A commitment-phobic, career-focused sexual dynamo who’s as powerful in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. A man in pursuit of the truth about his father’s mysterious death. A man who becomes obsessed with his number one suspect…

Faith Winters:
A beautiful heiress fighting to save her father’s legacy, a historic winery in Sonoma, California. An artist who’s willing to sacrifice her art to save her father’s legacy from foreclosure after her mother’s sudden death. A woman powerfully, passionately drawn to the Tiger. A woman with layers, consumed by a man determined to unwrap them; and, if necessary, willing to use them to destroy her.

Secrets. Betrayal. Danger. Steaming hot sex. A mystery, wrapped in a conundrum, steeped in an enigma, set in the wine, art, and financial worlds of San Francisco and Sonoma. Characters that draw you in, electrify you and arouse you in more ways that one. An undercurrent of suspense woven into every scene.

What’s not to love? Absolutely nothing, except I want the sequel. Yesterday.

Provocative, Book 1 of the White Lies duet, is a scorching, suspenseful work of literary art. It is Lisa Renee Jones at her best (although her Dirty Money Series is still in the running). It is riveting, addictive, erotic and deeply mysterious. It also has one hell of a cliffhanger, but fortunately, book two releases in July. Given the set-up in book one, the second half of this story will rock your world and leave you hanging on every word from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and read it now, then pre-order book two, Shameless, as soon as it’s available. I can’t wait.

Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes DIRTY SOULS the much-anticipated, nail-biting conclusion to Black Hearts…

Violet McQueen has always been a sensitive soul. Troubled and misunderstood, she never realized her place in the world, nor her true potential…until she met Vicente Bernal.

From birth, Vicente Bernal has always known his place in the world – he’s been groomed to be a ruthless king. Yet for a man whose soul has become morally bankrupt, it’s only through Violet he’s realizing the worth of someone’s heart.

But at what cost?

With a deadly game set in motion taking them from the stark deserts of California to the steamy jungles of Mexico, Violet and Vicente’s forbidden relationship will be put to the test. Boundaries will be pushed, lines will be crossed and souls will get very, very dirty.

Because how do you choose between blood and love when both might get you killed?

NOTE: Dirty Souls is the second and FINAL book in the Sins Duet. You MUST read book #1, Black Hearts first! You can find my review of Black Hearts here!

My Review of Dirty Souls

Dirty Souls (Sins Duet, #2)Dirty Souls by Karina Halle (Sins Duet, #2)
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

You don’t simply read Dirty Souls; you live it. Every gritty moment, every harrowing event, every explosive sexual encounter will thrill you or chill you to the bone. It’s a terrifying romance, an emotional thrill ride, and one of the most compelling novels I’ve ever read.

To say that the sequel to Black Hearts did not disappoint is a gross understatement. The second half of the duet was every bit as riveting as the first — but darker. The pace is exhausting, but perfect for the story. The characters are a complex mixture of dark and light, relatable, well developed, and utterly unforgettable.

As you might expect, the stakes in Dirty Souls are painfully high; in fact, they’re sometimes overwhelming. The danger is palpable from beginning to end. This book will OWN you.

But I’d read it again. And I’d read anything else Karina writes. If you’re in the mood for an erotic thriller that’s relentlessly suspenseful but ultimately rewarding, treat yourself to the Sins Duet today. It will stay with you long after you finish the epilogue, and leave you wanting more from this series and this author.

Black Hearts (Sins Duet #1)

Goodreads   |   Amazon  (affiliate link – also available on other platforms)

Book cover, Black Hearts

For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence, and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back.

What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year-old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too?

Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

But it’s a love with tragic consequences.

Both the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart but threaten their very lives.

Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.

And they’ll be paying the price with their souls.

AN EXCERPT…

“Hello, Jonas! How lovely to see you. I didn’t know you were back in town.” She offered her hand in greeting.

“Good afternoon, my lovely Rebecca.” He took her hand but lowered his head and kissed her cheek. “I couldn’t resist stopping by to see how you and your Nick are recovering from your adventure.”

Rebecca shot him a sly grin. “I’m flattered we entertained a thought from you, Jonas, but I have a feeling you know exactly what’s going on with everyone who crosses your path.”

He laughed. “Ah, there’s that sassy wit Noah has told me about. I’m glad you are back to your old self, not that you weren’t beauty and grace personified in my presence.” He winked.

Rebecca blushed at the reminder she had met him nearly naked. “Please have a seat, Jonas. Can I offer you something?”

When he simply stared at her, she felt the blush intensify. “That, my dear, is a loaded question, but I’ll leave it alone. You’re about to go up in flames as it is. I wonder why that might be?” He gifted her with a slow sexy grin, then chuckled as he placed a hand upon her back, leading her to the seated reception area.

He could probably feel her pulse race, Rebecca surmised. She was no match for his sexual play. “How can I help you, Jonas?”

“I believe I can help you, love. Noah says there’s a bit of tension between you and Nick. I’d like to be of assistance if I can.”

Rebecca eyed him with embarrassed curiosity. “I didn’t know you were into matchmaking.”

His eyes narrowed. “Curb the brat, love or I’ll give you the discipline you so obviously desire.”

She bristled at his tone, but he simply chuckled. “See? You’re practically begging me to spank you. It’s all over your body language. Nick needs to take a firmer hand with you.”

“I’m not sure what gave you the impression that I enjoy a good spanking or that my attitude is any of your business.” My God, what was wrong with her? She was acting like the brat he accused her of being.

“Knees, Rebecca. Now.”

Her independence warred with her submissive self. She was torn. This man’s tone brooked no interference.

“Now!”

She fell out of the chair and onto her knees, eyes lowered immediately. Dammit, how did he do that?

“Becca! Get the hell up!”

She heard the furious shout and hastily threw herself back into the chair. Nick’s order took precedence in her mind.

She glanced up in time to see Nick’s fist fly toward Jonas’ face. It was caught in the older man’s hand, so Nick threw the other fist. He was abruptly knocked to his butt when Jonas swept both legs out from under him with a precise kick. “Calm down. I was making a point.”

Both Nick and Rebecca looked at him in shock.

Jonas shook his head. “Both of you have to learn to trust; to communicate; to admit your mutual attraction and go from there. Or this D/s relationship is doomed to fail.”

“We don’t have a relationship.” Rebecca whispered. “I wasn’t what he needed.”

“That’s not true!” Nick stammered. “I wasn’t what you needed, Rebecca. I know that.”

Jonas looked at Nick. “Explain.”

Rebecca watched as Nick’s face closed down. “None of your damn business, Blackshire. I want to know what the hell you were doing forcing Rebecca to her knees?”

“I want her. She’s just stated that you don’t, so she’s open to play.”

“I am not!” Rebecca stammered. “I didn’t…I don’t know why I…” she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes.

“So you do belong to Nick?”

She felt the tears fall. She lowered her eyes, unable to look at either man as she told the sad truth. “No.”

“Yes.” Nick hissed, coming to his feet, facing Jonas. “She is mine and I’ll fucking kill you if try this shit again, Jonas. I don’t give a damn if you saved my life or not.”

SYNOPSIS

I shouldn’t have remembered him.

He was just a guy who walked through a restaurant. I didn’t know his name. We never made eye contact. There was no connection between us at all.

But I could feel him.

The tingle down my spine. The command in his presence. The snap of tension in the air around him. That was the first time I saw him, and I was captivated.

The second time was different.

He was in the mysterious back elevator of my apartment building. Our eyes met for a fleeting second before the doors closed, and I was staggered. My breath was robbed. My senses on high alert. My body hummed.

That was just the beginning.

He was the leader of the mafia. I was about to fall in love with him, and his name…

Cole Mauricio

An EXCERPT from COLE

Once inside the elevator, I stood to one side, watching him. He returned my gaze.

We still did not touch.

My chest tightened, hoping no one would call the elevator at that moment. We sailed past the lobby, the second floor, and stopped at mine. I put in the code, and the doors opened to my home.

I drew in a breath, filling my lungs again. God, it was time.

Stepping out with shaky knees, I bypassed the light switch. The full moon lit up my entire floor. I went to the kitchen and paused at the island. “Did you want something to drink?” I caught sight of the tequila and wine on the counter. There was more than enough.

Cole stepped up behind me and followed my gaze. “Were you going to have a party?” he asked, his breath coating the back of my neck.

I shivered, closing my eyes for one delicious moment. “I stocked up. I thought a friend was coming over tonight.”

His hand rested on my back, nudging my sweater aside to touch my skin. “He?”

“She. Sia.” I looked over my shoulder. He was so close. “She stood me up for a date.”

A faint smile showed. “I need to send her a thank-you card.”

“Please don’t sign it.”

“Why not?”

I turned around, easing my back against the island. Cole placed his hands on either side of me, trapping me in place.

“Because she’s slightly obsessed with you, though she’s in love with someone else now. She could circle back,” I joked.

“Me?”

“We saw you one night.”

“When?” He leaned away, but his hands remained on the counter. It was like he was giving me breathing space on purpose.

“At Gianni’s. We went there the night I moved in.”

He didn’t move, but I could feel him pulling away. A protest started in my head, but I bit back the words. He didn’t reply. He was waiting for me instead.

I continued, “You came in with a bunch of men and went upstairs. That was it.”

His eyes narrowed. “Did you talk to anyone?”

“What do you mean?”

“The staff?”

“About you?”

“About anything.”

My forehead wrinkled. “Sia networked with the hostess. They exchanged cards. Sia said the girl was a model. She recognized her from the Gala. That was it. Oh, well, another server sat with us for a drink later on. But they mostly talked with Sia about the Gala and about photographers—stuff like that.”

He relaxed, his hands loosening their hold on the counter. I was scared to ask what he was so worried they’d told us.

“I don’t know who you are.” I lifted a hand, placing it on his chest. His heart was racing, just like mine. My mouth parted in surprise. “If that’s what you’re worried about.”

He glanced down at my hand and held still. He was thinking something over. I held my tongue, worried it was me, that he was second-guessing this night for us. I wanted to tell him there was nothing to worry about, but it sounded ridiculous. I really had no idea. So I waited it out, my heart pressing against my rib cage.

When he looked back up, the hunger was in his eyes again—dark, primal, and more evident than ever. He took my hand and leaned in, closing the distance between us. With his other hand, he cupped the side of my face. “I wasn’t second-guessing this. I want you to know that.” His touch was tender.

“What were you thinking about?”

“Something else, but it wasn’t you.”

“This is one of those moments where you wish you could tell me, but you can’t? Not yet?”

The corner of his mouth lifted. His eyes moved from mine to my lips. “Something like that, yes.”

“Mmmm-hmmm,” I started to tease, but then his head dipped down, and his lips were on mine.

I gasped. The pleasure was immediate. His mouth was gentle, but as he felt my body’s reaction, he applied pressure. His touch grew more demanding, then I was kissing him back. I wanted more. Someone groaned. That was me.

His hand slid around to the back of my neck. He held me in his grip as his mouth explored mine, opening over me and slipping inside. My hands grasped his shoulders, just holding on. All I could focus on was his tongue. I met his with mine and reveled in the sensation. But it wasn’t enough. Need shot through my whole body.

My hands slid under his shirt and moved over his back and shoulders. His body was just as powerful as his presence. I felt the shift of his muscles. They trembled under my hands. The feeling was intoxicating. I had power over him, and I wanted more. I wanted to see how much power I actually had.

Pulling back, I studied him.

He was panting lightly. So was I.

I could see him wondering what I was going to do, so I reached back to the counter and started to lift myself. His hands caught the backs of my thighs, and he lifted me the rest of the way. Now sitting on the edge of the island, my legs parted, and he was back between them. His mouth went right to mine.

I couldn’t get over what I was doing. I didn’t care.

I didn’t think I would care the next day, the day after, or however long this lasted. I had no clue. I only knew I had one night. One long night.

TIJAN, in her own words…

I didn’t begin writing until after undergraduate college. There’d been storylines and characters in my head all my life, but it came to a boiling point one day and I HAD to get them out of me. So the computer was booted up and I FINALLY felt it click. Writing is what I needed to do. After that, I had to teach myself how to write. I can’t blame my teachers for not teaching me all those years in school. It was my fault. I was one of the students that was wishing I was anywhere but at school! So after that day, it took me lots of work until I was able to put together something that resembled a novel. I’m hoping I got it right since someone must be reading this profile! And I hope you keep enjoying my future stories.
