About The Goal…

She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated…

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

My Review of The Goal

The Goal (Off-Campus, #4)The Goal by Elle Kennedy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What’s not to love about the latest Off-Campus novel by Elle Kennedy? Absolutely nothing. It is flawlessly written and full of life, with all the heat and heart you’ve come to expect from this outstanding author.

If anything, Tucker, the hero, is almost too perfect – one of the best book boyfriends I’ve ever fantasized about. There isn’t a man alive that could measure up to this sexy, funny, romantic, loyal and athletic hunk of hockey hotness, so enjoy every moment you spend with him. His heroine, Sabrina, is a complicated, highly independent, funny, stubborn, driven young woman who is simultaneously immensely frustrating and completely endearing. Together, their chemistry is off the charts hot. When they’re apart, each struggling with their own fears and feelings, you positively ache for them.

This is no insta-love story; it’s a story of two very different personalities that, together, become whole. There are twists and turns along the way, any of which could derail their growing relationship, but the strength of each character shines through when you need it most.

Elle perfectly weaves the right amount of humor, angst, and poignance into every scene. I read it in a single sitting because I didn’t want to let this couple go. Now I wish I could go back again and read it for the first time.

Each book in this series reads perfectly as a standalone, but read in order, the story of these hockey buddies, their loves and losses, their individual journeys and pitfalls elevates this series to an entirely new level, actively engaging and enrapturing the reader from start to finish. I can’t wait to see whose story comes next.

My Review of Addicted …

Addicted (Outlaws #2)Addicted by Elle Kennedy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

According to Vocabulary.com, “…’Utopian’ describes a society that’s conceived to be perfect. ‘Dystopian’ is the exact opposite — it describes an imaginary society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible.”

You need to know this definition to appreciate the post-apocalyptic world Elle Kennedy creates in her Outlaws series. These are not the types of outlaws you see in old movies about the wild, wild west. The heroes and heroines of the Divergent Series, and even the Hunger Games, have it easy compared to these characters. This story is about some seriously desperate fugitives from a rigid, futuristic society. Characters who have never known true freedom, and have little hope of changing their society in their lifetime. Once you absorb yourself in their world, you understand what drives them and can truly appreciate their ‘sins’ as well as their struggles. In many ways, it’s frightening to contemplate – but at the same time, it’s not too much of a stretch to say that such societies already exist in many parts of our world. The things we take for granted could change with the push of a button or the pandemic spread of disease that could send our world into anarchy.

With that in mind, I found Addicted, #2 in the series, to be thought-provoking, suspenseful, and thoroughly entertaining. I read it in one day – actually, in one cross-country flight – and was completely absorbed in the story from start to finish. Yes, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is a LOT of sex, explicitly but realistically described, involving LOTS of partners. The refugee ‘outlaw’ society is sexually hedonistic, to say the least; but again, they’ve rarely, if ever, had even a glimpse at a different life than the one they have. These are consenting adults who are, of necessity, living in the moment, always looking over their shoulder, targeted for death as enemies of the state. Even the basic necessities – much less the comforts of life – are few and far between. It is no wonder that booze and sex serves as their means of escape from the horrors they’ve witnessed, and their ever-present, life-or-death struggle.

As in all societies, relationships matter in the Outlaw world. Some are based simply on the need to survive; alliances that are tenuous, forged reluctantly in a relentlessly cruel world. However, even in the darkest moments, love happens – because if nothing else, the rules in this society show its inhabitants that life is short, and time is precious. Above all else, Addicted is a friends-to-lovers romance, a coming of age story of two best friends who take their relationship to the next level, struggle with the consequences of their actions, and learn to respect and love each other in a more powerful way. It instills hope, and it takes courage.

Fans of Elle Kennedy’s lighter romance and romantic comedy series should expect something completely different in this dark, futuristic series. I admire her for her ability to write two completely different genres so authentically, alternating light and darkness, while retaining her clean, fresh writing style and incorporating passionate elements of love and romance in a starkly different setting. If you’re looking for a light read – this is not the book, or the series, for you. But if you like strong characters in a struggle for survival, can keep an open mind and an open heart, and are entertained by frank, thought-provoking drama, you will truly appreciate the value and uniqueness of this story.

My Review — 5 Blazing Stars…

When you love a book this much, it’s hard to know where to begin, or how to do it justice. I’ve actually struggled with this review because the book had an unusual effect on me – it took me to some dark places I didn’t want to go, made me laugh, made me cry, then left me hanging, absolutely addicted.

First let me say that Paper Princess is not for everyone. It’s a young adult novel with very mature themes. It can be dark and disturbing in ways you don’t expect. The struggles, both internal and external, are painful to witness. If you’ve ever been ‘the new girl’ in a new school at a tender age; if you’ve ever been bullied because you’re ‘different;’ if you’ve ever fallen – hard – for someone who isn’t good for you, who leads you on, and leaves you desolate; if you’ve ever lived on the wrong side of the tracks, the victim of assumptions about what you are because of where you’re from or what you’ve done … this book will resonate deeply and leave a lasting impression. It will make you angry. But most important – it will make you care. And it will make you appreciate the strength of the young heroine who finds herself caught up in a life she didn’t ask for, and isn’t sure she wants. If you’re open-minded, you will also care, deeply, about her guardian, Callum, and his five boys, because they are in a deep, dysfunctional struggle with grief – and no one is winning.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger, and it will KILL you. But unless you are completely opposed to delaying gratification, don’t let it stop you from reading this deeply thoughtful story with a finale that holds so much potential.  Yes, I walked around with my ‘cliffhanger’ face on for a couple of days, and a book hangover that wouldn’t let up, but it only made me want to read the next book more. On a scale of 1 to 10…my anticipation is a solid 15. I believe in happy ever afters, and I believe in these two authors – this is an incredible collaboration and I look forward to more of the Royals, the sooner the better.

Q&A with Erin Watt, about Paper Princess…

Q: Is this really a YA?

We recommend this for young adult readers, age 17 and up. We think it’s a book that will appeal to older teens and those adults who are in touch with their inner teen, like us.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger? I’ve heard there’s an awful cliffhanger! Why’d you write a cliffhanger?

We promise that we didn’t set out to write a cliffhanger, but Paper Princess does end in one. The good news is that the next book is up for pre-sale and it will be released July 25, 2016.

Praise for Paper Princess…

“Gritty, angsty, steamy, and rife with scandal and secrecy, Paper Princess is the kind of book you hope EVERY book will be when you open it. The kind you can’t put down, can’t forget about. Us - A Photo Quote from the novel by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

Excerpt

At long last, I’m twenty paces away, then ten. Then I’m opening our door. “Hey babe!” I call out like I always do. “I made it.” I drag my duffel over the threshold, then toss my suit coat on top, abandoning these things beside the door, because all I need now is a kiss.

Only then do I notice that our apartment smells amazing. Jamie has cooked dinner for me. Again. He is the perfect man, I swear to God.

“Hey!” he calls, emerging from the hallway leading to our bedroom. He’s wearing jeans and nothing else except—and this is unusual—a beard. “Do I know you?” He gives me a sexy smile.

“I was going to ask the same thing.” I’m staring at the sandy-blond beard. Jamie has always been clean-shaven. I mean—we’ve known each other since before facial hair. He looks different. Older, maybe.

And hot as blazes. Seriously, I can’t wait to feel that beard against my face, and maybe my balls… Jesus. The blood is already rushing south, and I’ve been home fifteen seconds.

And yet I’m just stuck there in the middle of the room for a moment, because even though it’s been eight months since Jamie and I started up together, I’m still a little stunned at my own good fortune. “Hi,” I say again, stupidly.

He walks forward, his easy gait so familiar that my heart breaks a little bit. He puts his hands on my traps and squeezes the muscle there. “Don’t go away for so long. If you do that again, I’m going to have to sneak into your hotel room on the road.”

“Promise?” I ask, and it comes out like gravel. He’s close enough now that I can smell the ocean scent of his shampoo and the beer he drank while he waited for me.

“If I ever get a winning lottery ticket and a day off, I’ll do it,” he says. “Hotel sex after a game? Sounds hot.”

Now I’m measuring the distance to our sofa and counting the layers of clothes I’ll need to remove in the next ninety seconds.

My Review

Us (Him, #2)Us by Sarina Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are no words … and there aren’t enough stars in any rating system to express how much I adore this series. I am rarely without words, but I love these books and their characters so much it’s almost painful to try and write a review that does the series justice. Him, book 1, rocked my world. I knew Us would be great – it couldn’t be anything but, given its talented authors and beautiful storyline. But I have to say it went so far beyond my expectations I was left with a book hangover and couldn’t start another book for days. In the meantime, I read the series again. And then again. It raises the bar on the genre to a dizzying height.

How do you improve on the love affair that began in Him (#1 in the series)? You take two soulmates who love each other, and put them in the most challenging situation possible: a demanding life, full of media scrutiny, long road trips, and all too brief stolen moments, and add the pressure of success; then cover it in a thin veil of secrecy. You mix in two passionate, obstinate, idealistic young men – and take away the one thing that’s always bonded them, even before they became a couple – easy, open, straightforward communication. In their misguided efforts to keep their relationship on a pedestal – each young man chooses to face his inner demons and his external conflicts alone. Unspoken feelings simmer, confusion moves in, and resentment slowly grows. It’s relationship cancer, and it takes its toll. Eventually, it all boils over – in the worst possible way.

They know they belong together, but at what cost? Brace yourself – it’s not easy, but it’s so, so worth it. So grab a few tissues, and have faith in these two beautiful souls. Once you take this emotional journey with them, you will only love them more. Their connection to each other wavers from time to time, but when it’s good … it’s more than good. It’s perfect. It will leave you feeling like your heart just might burst.

Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy are popular, bestselling sports romance authors in their own right, and I love everything they’ve published separately. But together they make living, breathing, absolutely unforgettable stories – bordering on literary magic; and I hope there will be many, many more love stories such as this in their future. I’ve grown to love Jamie and Wes, but also their teammates, friends, and the Canning Clan. I certainly hope there’s a sequel — ok, more than one — yet to come. I’m just not ready to say goodbye.

Summary

Can your favorite hockey players finish their first season together undefeated?

Five months in, NHL forward Ryan Wesley is having a record-breaking rookie season. He’s living his dream of playing pro hockey and coming home every night to the man he loves–Jamie Canning, his longtime best friend turned boyfriend. There’s just one problem: the most important relationship of his life is one he needs to keep hidden, or else face a media storm that will eclipse his success on the ice.

Jamie loves Wes. He really, truly does. But hiding sucks. It’s not the life Jamie envisioned for himself, and the strain of keeping their secret is taking its toll. It doesn’t help that his new job isn’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped, but he knows he can power through it as long as he has Wes. At least apartment 10B is their retreat, where they can always be themselves.

Or can they? When Wes’s noisiest teammate moves in upstairs, the threads of their carefully woven lie begin to unravel. With the outside world determined to take its best shot at them, can Wes and Jamie develop major-league relationship skills on the fly?

Warning: contains sexual situations, a vibrating chair, long-distance sexy times, and proof that hockey players look hot in any shade of green.

HIM

They don’t play for the same team. Or do they?

Photo of the cover of HIM, by Sarina Bowen and Elle KennedyJamie Canning has never been able to figure out how he lost his closest friend. Four years ago, his tattooed, wise-cracking, rule-breaking roommate cut him off without an explanation. So what if things got a little weird on the last night of hockey camp the summer they were eighteen? It was just a little drunken foolishness. Nobody died.

Ryan Wesley’s biggest regret is coaxing his very straight friend into a bet that pushed the boundaries of their relationship. Now, with their college teams set to face off at the national championship, he’ll finally get a chance to apologize. But all it takes is one look at his longtime crush, and the ache is stronger than ever.

Jamie has waited a long time for answers, but walks away with only more questions—
can one night of sex ruin a friendship? If not, how about six more weeks of it? When Wesley turns up to coach alongside Jamie for one more hot summer at camp, Jamie has a few things to discover about his old friend…and a big one to learn about himself.

Warning: contains sexual situations, hotties on hockey skates, skinny-dipping, shenanigans in an SUV and proof that coming out to your family on social media is a dicey proposition.
