Today we celebrate the release of Bittersweet, the first novel in the new True North series by best-selling author Sarina Bowen. As a special addition, I had the opportunity to interview Sarina about the book, the series, and her life as an author. Read on…
Farmers make the earth move.
The last person Griffin Shipley expects to find stuck in a ditch on his Vermont country road is his ex-hookup. Five years ago they’d shared a couple of steamy nights together. But that was a lifetime ago.
At twenty-seven, Griff is now the accidental patriarch of his family farm. Even his enormous shoulders feel the strain of supporting his mother, three siblings and a dotty grandfather. He doesn’t have time for the sorority girl who’s shown up expecting to buy his harvest at half price.
Vermont was never in Audrey Kidder’s travel plans. Neither was Griff Shipley. But she needs a second chance with the restaurant conglomerate employing her. Okay—a fifth chance. And no self-righteous lumbersexual farmer will stand in her way.

An Interview with Sarina
Tell readers about your inspiration for the True North series. What is it about the setting, rural/farm life, and lumbersexuals that called to you, and why do you think readers will love reading about the men and women featured in these stories?
Farmers really are sexy. True story! I am surrounded by interesting growers where I live. The organic-or-die Cedar Circle Farm in Thetford, VT is one of my favorites, and we buy hard cider in growlers from Poverty Lane Orchard in Lebanon, NH. These are not your grandfathers’ farmers. They’re young activists who want to change the shape of our food supply, and they are really inspiring.
Is there one book you’ve written – or collaborated on – that you’re most proud of, or that’s had a bigger ‘impact’ on you than you expected in some other way? Tell readers about it.
The first time I published a MM novel was UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR and the departure terrified me. But it’s one of my best books and I haven’t regretted it for even a second.
What keeps you inspired with fresh ideas for stories/series, and what keeps you going when you feel stuck or even a bit discouraged (besides deadlines!)? Where do you look for inspiration, or what do you do when you feel ‘stuck’?
Getting out of the house really helps! Even a quick weekend away can totally recharge my batteries.
When and how did you decide to write professionally, and how did you decide on contemporary romance as your genre? If you wanted to try your hand at a different genre, which one would it be?
Confession: romance is not my first attempt! I’m also published in non-fiction and women’s fiction. It took me a while to find what I loved best.
What’s the best piece of advice or feedback you’ve received about being an author? What’s ONE tidbit can offer to those of us who are thinking about – or actually working on – their first novel? (Asking for a friend…LOL).
Learn to take criticism! Honest opinions about your work are invaluable.
Finally … How many books are you working on right now – alone or as a collaboration with another author (or authors)? What can readers look forward to in the last six months of 2016/early 2017? (Please, please, please say there’s more Jamie & Wes…!)
Elle Kennedy and I are writing a book for Blake and Jess, which begins at Wes and Jamie’s wedding! Title coming soon. In the meantime I’ll bring out STEADFAST (True North #2) in July, and ROOKIE MOVE (Brooklyn Bruisers #1) on September 6th.
