Temporary, by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry: Review and Author Interview

Two fantastic authors deliver one wonderful standalone Romance…it’s

Temporary

by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry

Front Cover, Temporary

Synopsis

The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen is the one who can ruin everything…

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful — pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full-time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works–if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can’t afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo…

Review: 4.5 Stars

Temporary is a sweet, contemporary Cinderella story that will sweep you off your feet, but also hot enough to melt your glass slippers!

In this hot new stand-alone romance by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry, your Prince Charming is Callan, a hot Aussie playboy and the estranged black sheep in his family’s cattle dynasty, Walker Holdings, Inc.

Grace, our Cinderella, works as a temp in Manhattan by day, raises her teenage sister–Olivia–by night, and desperately hopes her current assignment will secure her future with Walker Holdings.

The primary source of conflict is Callan’s cold-blooded, manipulative, power-hungry mother, Victoria, who hires Grace to inventory the holdings of her deceased brother, Callan’s beloved uncle, who lived in New York until his death. Victoria Walker is a classic fairy tale villain archetype, a greedy, heartless woman you’ll truly love to hate.

Like any fairy tale, there’s a beautiful message underneath; and like the Cinderella story, it’s all about family. There’s the dark side: greed, sibling rivalry, money, and power. But there’s also the bright side: love, honor, self-sacrifice, and humility. The plot is driven by the pull of sexual attraction (which, by the way, is a very powerful attraction); the struggle between what the head wants and what the heart needs; and the vulnerability that results when you risk it all for the sake of a love that may turn out to be only a fantasy. It’s heart-warming, mildly suspenseful, emotional and unexpectedly inspiring.

If you’re looking for a sweet, sexy, funny, poignant story that will allow you to escape into your most tempting romantic fantasy, lose yourself in Temporary this weekend. It’s a decadent delight.

An Interview with Sarah & Sarina

What do you enjoy most about collaborating/co-writing a book? What are the possible pitfalls and how do you handle them?
Sarah: The magic of having someone else write the book while I was sleeping never got old! And I got to wake up every morning to a Sarina Bowen scene. Doesn’t get much better than that!. There weren’t any major pitfalls that I can think of.
Sarina: The time difference was the only hard part. I confess to sending at least one email reading: Wake up! I had an idea. Poor Sarah. We had a lot of fun with the culture clash.
Is there one character you’ve written that has special meaning for you? Who’s character traits and/or arc changed you in some way as you wrote him or her? Who is it and why do they stand out as your favorite?
Sarah: There are two brothers who both had their own books – Tyler in The Last Goodbye, and Jon in One Good Reason. They were both survivors of an abusive father, and I found them both very moving books to write because one of my close friends had a difficult childhood and I wanted to really honor the truth of that.
Sarina: Corey from The Year We Fell Down will always be close to my heart. She taught me how to write a fierce heroine.
Is there a character from a book by another author that had a similar effect on you – or is generally unforgettable? Who is it and why?
Sarah: One of the first strong heroines who really stayed with me was Lessa, from Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonflight. She was such a difficult, determined, complicated woman, and at the end of the day she risked everything to save her world.
Sarina: Some of Alice Hoffman’s female characters are still close to me even twenty years after I’ve read them. Nora Silk from Seventh Heaven is so wonderfully unique.
What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?
Sarah: Don’t worry about what any other writer is doing or what’s happening in their career. I didn’t understand that when I first heard it, but now I do. You write the books you write, and you have your own career, no one else’s. You’ve got to run your own race.
Sarina: Give your characters internal yearnings that they can’t yet articulate on page one. It hasn’t failed me yet.
What would you like your readers to know about you new story? What do you hope they take away from it?
Sarah: I want them to know we had so much fun writing it. I would literally giggle with glee when I woke up and read what Sarina had written that day. I would love for readers to have as much fun reading Temporary as we did writing it.
Sarina: I want them to know that Callan is a very unique hottie. You won’t want to miss him.

A chance meeting turned my world inside out.

Intelligent, sexy, and rich. With a dash of roguish charm and a cocksure smile, Nathan Blake is the ultimate fantasy. He can have any woman he wants with only a glance.

And he wants me.

My past has left me broken and humiliated, wary of men like him. I cut myself off from the pain, moving thousands of miles away to escape every reminder, determined to start anew.

Ive been second best before. It isn’t happening again.

One kiss and I’m caught under his spell, drawn to him with every breath I take.

I can’t resist.

The passion that explodes between us becomes an intense connection neither of us thought we’d share.

Or need.

The suffering inside me reflects his – a pain I know he feels, but can’t bring himself to reveal.

I have no idea his love can heal me – that mine can heal him…

if only I can let down my guard for him and trust.

Reviewers Say…

Move aside Gideon Cross! You are NO MATCH for Nate Blake! He’s freaking amazing and so delectable. Kara and Nate’s chemistry is undeniable. I love their playful banter and the sexual tension is immensely felt. I could go on and on about this book, and I will say that 5 stars doesn’t cut it for this one. It deserves as many stars as I can find. Do yourself a favor and read this story! You WILL NOT be disappointed. Steph John is headed to stardom! You have a fan for life! I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Stephanie Allen, Sinfully Sweet Promotions

This book was so good. Well, good doesn’t start to describe this book! Let’s see- superior, superb, outstanding, exemplary, umm- it was just plain HOT! Exquisitely Hot! There that is how I want to describe this debut book by Stephanie John, Exquisitely Hot. Salvation, isn’t your normal office romance, or your normal billionaire, alpha male takes his woman, kind of book, it is so much more. John amazes me, with her writing skill, she writes with a level of complexity that matches seasoned authors. There was no detail too small for her and her story flowed seamlessly. Her characters were rich in description and I don’t think I ever fell in love with the male lead quite so fastWhat I really liked about this story itself, it was unique. It was a billionaire guy, falling in love with an office staff with one look basically. That part is one in a million, but she really made it different. She made this billionaire different. Stephanie John made me LOVE Nate in this book.

DayReader Reviews

Stephanie John has a genuine talent for bringing stories and characters to life and taking the reader along on an effortless ride to pure pleasure. And when I say pure pleasure – your heart will pound as their love heats up. One particular scene at the beach house will rank among the most erotic and powerful expressions of love that I have ever read.
This book deserves more than five stars – it deserves a heaven full of them – because that is where you’ll think you’ve been when you’ve finished Salvation. I can’t wait for the next chapter … and the next … and the next. Don’t deny yourself one of the truly outstanding contemporary romances of 2015.

About the Author

Steph-newLogoMost days, you’ll find Stephanie John on a yacht, wearing a very skimpy bikini, drinking champagne, eating chocolate and never gaining weight. When she isn’t asleep and dreaming, in real life you’re more likely to find her at the school gates, wearing whatever she dragged on that morning, drinking copious amounts of coffee.  She still eats chocolate, though — everyone has their vices, right? Somehow, amidst the chaos of full-time mummy duties, she manages to write.  Contemporary romance has always been her favourite genre to read for as long as she can remember (age-appropriate, of course).

Never in a million years did it occur to her to write one of her own.  Now, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Salvation is her debut book, released in March 2015 to outstanding five star reviews.

Excerpts

Laura…

“But yours is… What was it you said last night about your looks? Oh, yes, that’s it. Ruggedly handsome. Well, lover, you proved last night that yours is rugged and it certainly is handsome. So thick and long enough to rub so delightfully inside me last night. I want very badly to feel it forcing my lips and teeth apart, to feel its urgent need to push into me, to feel it take me ruggedly.”She looked up into his eyes, letting him see the need in her own.“Will you do those things for me, Dan? For me…and to me?”

Dan…

Over and over, his arousal, fuelled by her passion for him, drove him into her. He loved hearing her soft grunts in response to the force of his thrusts inside her. He loved feeling his hardness forcing her open each time, then entering her and sliding hard and fast into her until her opening stopped him. And he loved most of all the way she held him inside herself, pressed herself around him every time he entered her or pulled back out.

 The Beach…

Laura insisted she be the one to rub sunscreen into her own lightly tanned skin. When he asked her why, she just shook her head at him before telling him, “How naive do you think I am? I’ve just finished giving you a very satisfying payback so do you actually believe I’ll let you anywhere near my body right now. I don’t think so!”
“But you can trust me.” Even as he said it, with a good attempt at a straight face, a laugh escaped him. “Okay, well maybe you can’t. But surely you’d feel better with my hands rubbing all over your body?”
He tried again for innocence, but she just started laughing and shaking her head at him until he sighed loudly and tried for sad and pathetic, which just made her laugh even harder till she had to hold her sides to try and get her laughter under control before it began to hurt. “So, should I take your reaction as a maybe?”
“Stop it! Stop it, Dan! I can’t breathe properly.”
He drew her into his arms and just held her gently while she tried to calm down. When he judged it was safe to continue to be his normal smart arse self again, he told her, “You don’t show me a great deal of trust, do you?”

 The Bedroom…

Laura moved away from the sting and hard into his groin which showed its appreciation by slowly growing against her.
“Hmm, there might be something in this physical abuse thing if you react this way.” She slowly twisted herself against his growing hardness, making it grow some more as she rubbed her softness across it. “I love a man’s morning arousal. When you’re still half-asleep, it’s wonderful to feel him growing hard in response to your snuggling body.” She sighed loudly for effect. “Sadly, I only have you here and you’re so nearly impotent I’ll never get the punishment I really need.”

About Khul Waters

Drop in and visit me (at http://khulwaters.wix.com/khulwaters) if you are looking for a place where loving intimacy, passion & eroticism merge inside fiction… There you can read excerpts from my stories or read reviews of them. You can find out why I write erotic romances…

Here are a few highlights about me and my life… I am an Australian, born and raised in Sydney. I was a high school teacher for most of my professional life. I have taught in many places in eastern Australia. I have also taught in England and Hong Kong for extended periods of time.

I chose to write in the genre of erotic romance in order to express the joy I find in life and in love. I began with short stories and poetry that mostly seemed to focus on one theme: the nature of love between men and women.

Specifically, I am intrigued by the nature of Dominant / submissive relationships. Not the stereotypical leather and whips type but the need for many men to take a dominating role in lovemaking and for many women to take a submissive role. My stories feature this preoccupation.

My Review

It has taken a long time for me to find words to adequately describe a debut novel that is truly a masterpiece of flawless fiction. Stephanie John has an amazing talent and has written a powerfully beautiful story. You cannot help but fall in love with Nate and Kara. They hook you at the very beginning and gradually reel you in until you wonder how you ever lived without them in your library.

Nate is – on the surface – a self-assured CEO and ladies’ man. Kara is – on the surface – a savvy, sassy foil for his advances.  But, as always, what you see isn’t necessarily what you get, and you get so much more from each of these principal characters.  They have layers that are gradually peeled away to reveal a passionate depth and complexity, compelling you to keep reading, and wanting more when you get to the end. They are truly memorable characters will stay in your heart as their journey continues.

Kara is cautious, reluctant to admit – and even more reluctant to give in to – the powerful attraction she feels for Nate. She believes him to be a player, the very last thing she needs to complicate the life she is trying to build for herself in Los Angeles.  If she allows herself to trust him, she is certain he will break her in the end. She wants to believe that his love is genuine, but her memories – and her assumption that Nate will be inevitably unfaithful – hold her back, time and time again. Kara has been broken before – and left with a sense of failure and unworthiness that she accepts without question – until Nate ignites the spark that begins to change her.

Nate knows that Kara is “the one,” long before he probably should – but say what you will about the implausibility of “insta-love,” it happens. And when it does there is nothing on earth that will stop it.  Nate realizes he has to earn Kara’s trust, and he devotes himself to the task with all that is in him. Gradually he makes her feel safe, he makes her feel sexy, and he makes her feel cherished.  We all want a man like that.

Naturally, the course of true love never runs smoothly.  What Nate fears most is losing Kara, so in an attempt to gain her trust, he does the one thing that threatens it … he keeps secrets. Nate, too, has a trauma in his past that threatens his present and their future.  He wants their relationship to last – to find the healing and happiness they both deserve – but there are treacherous curves ahead…in the next book of the series.

Excerpt

When I joined him, he was leaning against the sink staring at the wall, his features twisted in annoyance.  “It’s important to me,” I encouraged, setting his empty bottle on the counter beside him.  I pressed a hand to his shoulder.  “I want to know all about you like you do me.”

“Yeah,” he scoffed, shrugging me off, “except you won’t let me in either.”  The ferocity of him tossing the plates into the sink with a crash panicked me.  My ears began to ring with the sound of my heart thudding in my chest.  Nate glanced sideways, his face set.  “You’re keeping secrets, too.”

I winced at the harsh truth of his words.  What right did I have, asking him to open up when I couldn’t do it myself?

“Kara.”  His fingertips drifted over my cheekbone.  I jumped, taken aback by the veneration in his touch and the gentleness of his voice.  “I don’t want to argue, to spoil an idyllic couple of days.”

I hated seeing him like this, so lost and bewildered, out of control.  It went against so much of what I treasured about him.  Yet it gave me comfort to know he wasn’t just an ideal high on a pedestal, completely out of reach.  Nate was human, and he was here, with me.

I stepped closer and rubbed his arm.  His eyes were mesmerising, the pupils almost fully dilated.  My breath caught when I saw the depth of his feelings swimming in them as he stared back at me.  The tiny tick of his jaw pulsed as he gritted his teeth.  “I’m trying to do right by you.  Trying my utmost to shelter you.”

My body tensed.  “From what?”

Nate caressed my face, seeking and finding strength the way I did from him.  His eyes were fretful and undecided.  God, what had happened to make him behave so out of character?

I wrapped my arms around him and pressed my cheek to his chest.  His heart pounded frantically.  His shower gel still lingered on me, and mine on his skin.  The two scents, woody and almond merged together, giving me an inevitable sense of calm and assurance.  “What happened in New York?”
