To celebrate the release of Poughkeepsie Begins, I was delighted to be given the opportunity to cop a squat with Debra Anastasia and ask 5 questions — any questions. Not wanting to be a cliché, and being heavily influenced by large doses of cold medication, I decided to step outside my usual box of author questions and go for broke. Want to know why Debra is one of my all-time favorite authors? Take a peek at her responses.
1. Do you have a favorite curse word? If so, what is it? If there’s more than one, what are they? Please feel free to use them in a sentence or create a crazy insult you wish you could say to anyone who’s ever given you a hateful review.
2. What do you consider a man’s most attractive feature – physically, and in terms of personality or other attributes? (If you have a favorite photo representing that physical feature, it would be a bonus.)
4. Of all the books you’ve published (or even in a work-in-progress) – which character are you most fond of, proud of…and why? What inspired the creation of that character? Is it based on someone in your own life, or are certain aspects of the character like you in some way? Who would you cast as that character in a movie or series based on the book? I know that’s a bunch of questions…I love detail.
5. Do you have an all-time favorite literary character – contemporary or classic? If so, who is it and why does the character resonate with you? If not, what attributes do you look for in characters that stay with you long after you read their story? If there’s more than one – feel free to list.

Book Review – Poughkeepsie Begins
“For a few heartbeats, three teenaged boys raged at their childhood. They hollered at fate. They screamed out of pure need. It was the sound of Peter Pan fucking dying, the ghost of dreams that would never be…”
Hauntingly beautiful. Stunning. Breath-taking. Terrifying. Erotic. Tragic. A perfect beginning – or ending. If you haven’t read the Poughkeepsie series, start now and don’t stop until you’ve read every last word. You can thank me later.
The wonderful thing about Poughkeepsie Begins is that no matter whether you read it first or last in the series – or even if you read it as a standalone and go no further, it is so powerful that it will stay with you forever. If you read it last – you’ll want to go back and read the rest of the series again, because it will put so many things in a new context. If you read it first, or as a standalone, you’ll be so addicted you’ll have no choice but to see what happens to this brotherhood – three young men, three lost souls, coming together as brothers – helping each other find their place in the world after a lifetime of staggering abuse and cruelty. The odds are stacked against them, and their choices are tragically limited by their circumstances. They are forced to do unspeakable, unthinkable things to survive, desperate not to let their past define their future.
Beckett is a defiant, irreverent, reckless, drop-dead sexy anti-hero. Clearly the leader of the brotherhood, his dedication to the other two members of the trio leads him to take deadly risks and sacrifice his own dreams of redemption in order to save them all. His devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with the girl of his dreams – a girl he knows is ‘too good’ for him – a girl that makes him question all of his beliefs about who he is and who he can be. Candy – a brave heroine in her own right – believes in him, loves him, and is willing to do anything to save him from himself. Their struggle is poignant – often funny, ultimately painful, but always full of the deepest kind of desire. Their chemistry is off the charts – bringing heat and heart to the story in more ways than one.
Blake is quiet, reclusive, a dreamer – a musician. He cannot bear the light of day – uses the darkness to escape his pain and fear. But he is far from weak – there is great strength in his lost soul. Ironically, he often brings the light they all need when they need it the most.
Cole has been taken to the edge of insanity by the trauma of his early childhood, at the hands of a mother capable of the worst form of abuse. He is the most vulnerable of the three, and the most broken. When all hope is gone, he escapes by losing himself, disembodying his pain and fear, giving in and climbing into the darkness. It’s frightening to witness. But with Blake and Beckett by his side, Cole is so much more than the tragedy of his past. He is a partner, a warrior for the two innocent little girls caught up in their world – in need of love and protection. Despite his past and his tenuous hold on the present, Cole is a remarkable young man and part of what makes this such a compelling brotherhood.
The reckless one. The quiet one. The broken one. An unbreakable bond.
You will love each one, feel their desperate need for each other, and experience the power of their brotherhood. Even when you know that their innocent childhood dreams may always be just beyond their grasp, even when they go so far there is no turning back, you will find yourself hoping for the impossible – that they will be fully healed of the pain they’ve suffered at the hands of others. That they will find love, acceptance, and redemption – and that they don’t die trying. In the end – which I won’t reveal – Poughkeepsie changes you. It changes your concept of justice in a cruel, dark world. It changes your concept of family. Hopefully, it changes the assumptions you make, the stereotypes you write off as “lost causes.” It pulls no punches, makes no apologies. It’s a gritty story that you NEED to read about three tragic souls you need to understand.
Debra Anastasia is an enormously talented author with an amazing range. Whether tragedy or comedy, she writes with a deep and abiding passion for her characters and their stories that you can feel. Whether haunting or hilarious, her characters are utterly unforgettable.
Poughkeepsie Begins will keep you on the edge of your seat. It will break your heart, but it will also feed your soul. Once you take this trip to Poughkeepsie, you’ll never really leave.
